ENGLISH VERSION

Hello, music lovers! We've reached week 203 of this magnificent Festival that keeps us "in shape" when it comes to music.

This week I'm bringing you a song that was one of my childhood favorites, "Fuiste mía un verano" (You Were Mine One Summer). A great hit by the unforgettable Leonardo Favio, who, in addition to being an excellent singer-songwriter, was also a film director, producer, and screenwriter of great talent.

It was 1968, and I was nine years old at the time. Leonardo Favio released his first album, "Fuiste mía un verano" (You Were Mine One Summer), a resounding success. Its songs were the soundtrack for the film of the same name, in which Leonardo Favio acted.

I remember that at the time, I thought Leonardo Favio looked exactly like Marlon Brando, and it struck me as odd that I seemed to be the only one who noticed such a resemblance.

I always loved all his songs; there wasn't a single one of his that I didn't like. I shared this fondness for his music with my mother and my Aunt Amanda, but not with my sisters because they practiced a strict religion that forbade them from listening to—let alone singing—music that didn't speak of God.

I remember that my Aunt Amanda listened to a radio program called "Recordar es vivir" (Remembering is Living) every morning, featuring songs that were already old at the time, and she dedicated her afternoons to listening to the popular songs of the moment.

So in the mornings you'd hear Toña La Negra, Carmen Delia Depiní, Orquesta Aragón, and José Luis Moneró, but in the afternoons, Leonardo Favio, Raphael, Sandro, and Tom Jones reigned supreme.

Bringing this song back today brings back very fond musical memories from my childhood.

The fact that Leonardo Favio's songs were fundamentally accompanied by the guitar made him even more relatable. My mother called the guitar "big guitar" and the cuatro "little guitar." She told me about her childhood in Barlovento, about her uncles who played the "big guitar," and about my paternal great-grandmother who played—according to her—every instrument.

Her brother, my uncle Alejandro, played guitar, cuatro, and tres. He was also the bohemian of the family. He composed beautiful songs and spectacular Christmas music.

He was a shoemaker... back when being a shoemaker meant making them by hand. He spent his days making sandals and went to the bars at night to sell them to the waitresses. He would arrive home at three or four in the morning without a pair of sandals, but also without a penny.

Then he'd go into the bathroom and leave a mess, and my Aunt Maria would get up at whatever hour it was so that at dawn my grandmother wouldn't notice anything amiss and wouldn't get upset.

I remember my Uncle Alejandro singing and playing "Las blancas azucenas" on the tres. He played it incredibly well, and he didn't use a pick or a fingernail, but rather a small billet like the ones he put on the sandals he made. He was quite a character. He also stuttered, by the way—except when he sang.

So many memories come to mind linked to this song by Leonardo Favio.

His style was unmistakable... Upon hearing one of his songs for the first time, you could tell it was by Leonardo Favio. They would begin with rather low notes, almost in a recitative style, and then move to higher notes, sung with a louder voice at the moments when the lyrics marked the most intense parts of the story.
