Book of vintage photographs. / Libro de fotografías antiguas

I’ve always loved wooden furniture with antique designs—especially pieces made of cedar with carvings—but given my salary, I’ve had to settle for just looking at them in my grandfather’s old books; the local furniture stores certainly don’t carry anything like that.
I walk past the racks of second-hand clothes; the distinctive scent of handmade detergents distracts me from my search for the shirt I wanted. Rosemary, basil, vanilla—I can’t imagine who buys them, though they clearly sell well; the woman selling them drives a very nice pickup truck and doesn't seem to be struggling at all.
That’s strange; I could have sworn that stall wasn't there before—or maybe the detergent scent is just overpowering next to the smell of the bath soaps. A young woman of about twenty, distracted by her phone, waits on me without much interest in making a sale.
"Good morning, miss. How much is the neem soap?"
I ask as I try to catch the scent of the soap.
"They’re handmade—twenty pesos each—but if you buy three, I’ll let you have them for fifty."
A bargain—though I’m the only one who uses those soaps. Still, I’m in a good mood.
"I’ll take you up on that offer, miss."
It’s a bitterly cold day, so I didn't mind for a moment that she didn't get up from her chair to help me. It must be around two degrees, though I imagine it was even colder overnight, given the icicles still hanging there. But well, she’s going to have to step out from under her blanket to ring up the soaps.
"Good heavens."
The exclamation escapes me before I can stop it. The chair the young woman was sitting in is one of the antiques I’d seen in my grandfather’s book...
Hasta la próxima.
