A culinary retreat from Mom with so much love and dedication.

Mom is a great cook and what she has feed me, will always be a memory of not only my life time, but also kids since they have enjoyed some niche items prepared by her. She always reminds me a simple joy of life - enjoy the food that you eat every time, with gratitude, because tomorrow is not guaranteed. We did not have abundance of supplies because of financial issues, but she always managed to cook tasty recipes made of simple ingredients and still cooks some of those typical items, whenever I go to my native.

Have you ever tasted the banana flower curry ? Banana is probably one such plant, every part of whose is useful - the leaves, the stem, the fruit and even the flower. But cooking the flower is no easy stuff and very time consuming and needs some special skill - that's almost on the verge of extinct. And again, procuring the banana flower at the right time and cooking is like an well timed opportunity, and we got one last time.

So we have had this curry banana ready and that is when we cut the flower, but one was not enough. Luckily we had another bunch in another plant and she decided to use both and prepare the item, as I was there - it reflects her love for me in her work and that is one other quality I inherit from her - if you love someone, then show it in your duty towards them.

DSC09710.JPG

And look at this bunch - nature is amazing to produce a side bunch after the main one, we barely see this kind of produce.

DSC09677.JPG

So my job was to cut those flowers and bring it to her, but the amount of effort and precision she put after that amazed me, especially at this age.

For the next couple of hours, she patiently took out those flower bunch, extract the unwanted thread in each flower, cut them minutely and then soak them with salt - all this was just to make them ready for the preparation. And the dedication and love she puts in preparing every item deserves heartfelt applause - I wanted to capture and keep a memoir of that in this post. I know they will be extinct after Mom stops cooking.

She follows a simple philosophy of life - if you have a roof to take shelter, food to eat and clothes to wear then thank God and be dutiful, dedicating your effort with honesty. Slowly I am transforming myself to enjoy each moment of life with what we have - try my best to perform my duties with honesty and leave the rest to the almighty. Enjoy your food and sleep every time, every day - they are the most precious assets which we often ignore.

And she does not ask for anything, she stopped wearing a gold bangle as it got damaged and asked me to take her to a local shop to repair them and they denied. Before coming I brought them for a Doctor consultation and got an opportunity to buy her a new bangle, more to come on that.....

This post is in response to the TRANSFORMATION THRSDAY PROMPT of this week.

because tomorrow is not guaranteed

Exactly the only thing that exists is NOW.

but she always managed to cook tasty recipes made of simple ingredients and still cooks some of those typical items whenever I go to my native.

Because she uses a secret ingredient called LOVE & AFFECTION, even a simple dish becomes special.

But cooking the flower is no easy stuff and very time-consuming and needs some special skill - that's almost on the verge of extinct.

I was about to say that, it's the most difficult recipe, very few in Odisha might have that skill, even though banana ant you could in every Odia household.

So my job was to cut those flowers and bring it to her, but the amount of effort and precision she put after that amazed me, especially at this age.

I am happy to see ପନିକି in your kitchen
ମା ର ପଣତ କାନି ଆଉ ରୋଷେଇ ଘରେ ପନିକି ଆଉ ଦେଖିବାକୁ ମିଳୁନି

She follows a simple philosophy of life - if you have a roof to take shelter, food to eat and clothes to wear then thank God and be dutiful, dedicating your effort with honesty.

When the "state of being" and "state of doing" coincides, you become the happiest person in this world.

Thank you

Thank you for sharing with us the love and intention your mom puts into everything especially her cooking which truly shows the essence of minimalism. It is also inspiring to see how her values "...the most precious assets which we often ignore..." have shaped your transformation over the years.

Best regards.

I never had this recipe, but surely if it is from the old genre and that too from your mom, it must be a recipe to note down for future. These are the legacy, which are slowly fading away. There were many recipes that were lost with each generation.....mother love is priceless.... Shat-shat naman🙏

Women of your mother's age lead simple and humble lives. They do not have the same passions as the current generation and even when cooking, they cook in a traditional way using simple ingredients (found around the house). Unlike today's fast food, they are more delicious. Like your mother, my mother is also alive, so we can still reminisce about old delicious memories while eating a traditional delicious recipe.
Banana flower curry was prepared for me by my mother-in-law at her house on Wednesday in the most delicious way. I remember once I also prepared banana flower tempered with dried fish.

Mom's food are special and it's amazing how they make something out of nothing. I have been staring at the recipes and didn't believe food can be made from it.

I enjoy my mom's food a lot too and would travel just to have a taste of her delicacies. The beautiful memories we create at the dining is one of those things we will always look back on tomorrow.

As my friend says, we must be grateful every day for all the things that the Almighty puts in our path, and especially the food. Also, seeing your mother prepare that banana flower curry with such dedication is great and at the same time shows you all the love that she feels every day of her life for you (her family).

That's really great to see such activities done by your mother with so much of dedication and hardwork. She's really so dedicated towards doing her work and this is so efficient. She's performing it really well and hopefully it's good for me to gain something new and come across such things which is really rare.!!
When I come across your post about the traditions and the treats you make it's really good to see it, I just feel so good about learning something new and especially if I'm able to, show it to my mother and ask her whether she now's it or can make it.!?
Have a good day, it's was really amazing to go through your post.!! Your mother's effort is really very appreciated.!
