NEW PROP BUILD: Harley Quinn Eye Mask
If I'm going to build a mallet to run around with...
I should at least provide a way to hide your identity in the way old cartoons and comics do, with a simple eye mask that renders any witnesses absolutely 100% incapable of recognizing or identifying you in any way.
With some crude face measurements, and alot of scribbling, I got a paper template going.
You see where I am going with this. Basically an infinity or sideways eight to go over the eyes.
That thinner one you see was the first one, after trying it against a real face I felt the eye coverings could be thicker to cover the roundy part of the cheek and the eye brows.
When I was happy with the shape, I traced to EVA foam and assembled the bones from four parts.
This shape seemed to be working. Now to reinforce with a second layer of foam...
and bound with a hair tie after applying a little heat. I wanted it to curve in this direction.
With the second layer dried and stuck to the other, I cut the edges just slightly bigger.
I was able to apply some rubber cement and pinch the edges down to make an even more curved and more smooth edge.
What about the eye holes?
With a bit of rubber cement and some manual persuasion, I made some smooth edges in the eye holes. This you see is the back of the mask.
An assist from a clothespin for the drying process.
More clothespin action to help work on a nose shape.
After a few applications of light heat, clothespins, ties and tape I get this.
Then another face test. I spent some time further shaping and making it flexible enough to lay against a face more properly.
After a few days of shaping, it was time for paint.
I laid it down thick on the first coat. I went back and brushed down the amount of paint.
After drying I went over with another (thinner) layer.
I took a Dremel to the raised edges on the back side of the mask in the hopes that it will improve the fit on the nose and improve comfort around the eyes.
I cut parts from this face mask to use with this eye mask.
I pretty much have this mask done. What I am doing now is some minor shaping to make the fit more comfortable. Then I will do some touch up painting and a final seal.
My first shot at a very cartoony mask in real life.
