Amidst my daily work, thoughts of returning to my routine keep coming back to me. Like every Thursday, I’m preparing a post for "Throwback Thursday" (TBT). These past few weeks have been incredibly sad and hard to process in the wake of these natural disasters. Although my family and friends only had a scare, I can't stop thinking about it, and the fear paralyzes me. So, all I can do is contribute my own small part to help. I have to return to my country in October—to my job, my routine, and my relatives—even though I’m here in Madrid with family, too. Having a divided heart isn't easy; it means keeping track of two places very far apart, in different time zones.
I remember having to learn how to take selfies to send to my children in Madrid via WhatsApp, showing them how I looked and what I was doing at work. My daughter would notice details—like how I hadn't dyed my hair or how thin my face looked. That kept me in constant communication with my children, especially my daughter, who was the most observant. It was as if she were trying to uncover the secrets I wasn't telling her about home—like how, even though everyone was working, there wasn't enough money for repairs, and almost everything went toward food and essentials.
It pained me not to be able to fix basic things, like the bathroom sink faucet. When I asked friends, they told me the same thing: they couldn't afford small home repairs, and things were just deteriorating. There was no money for paint to spruce things up for Christmas. Yet, they would make any sacrifice necessary to prepare hallacas—a traditional Christmas dish. Things just kept piling up, and my daughter could see it all reflected in a simple selfie, even though I wasn't telling her a word about it.
This is my contribution for this Thursday to the TBT Contest: One Photo, One Story, One of Those Days – Thursday, July 2nd, where we share a memory or a photograph and tell the story behind it. You are all invited to participate—though only on Thursdays; here I share the rules provided by Professor @lanzjoseg for the contest in the TopFamily community.
