Cada jueves me encanta traer bonitos recuerdos. Me siento frente a mi biblioteca y saco los álbumes de fotografía para refrescar mis memorias visuales, momentos del pasado, de tener a toda la familia cerca veinte años después casi todos han emigrado. Me detengo a mirar la fotografía junto a mis sobrinos pequeños, apenas en los últimos semestres de la carrera de psicopedagogía en Caracas. Disfrutaba estos momentos los llevaba de paseo a la playa los sábados, jugábamos a las carreras y con la pelota al futbol.

Every Thursday, I love to revisit fond memories. I sit in front of my bookshelf and pull out photo albums to refresh my visual recollections—moments from the past when the whole family was close by. Now, twenty years later, almost everyone has emigrated. I pause to look at a photograph taken with my young nephews—back when I was in the final semesters of my degree in educational psychology in Caracas. I truly cherished those times; I would take them on outings to the beach on Saturdays, and we would race each other or play soccer.

Seeing them now—during my trip to Madrid—I realize how much time has passed. There are two brothers: one fair-haired, the other dark-haired. One completed a university degree, while the other left his studies to work in the family business. Later, the dark-haired brother was diagnosed with diabetes and required insulin treatment. Although we attributed his illness to his daily consumption of soft drinks, there was also a history of the condition on his father’s side of the family.

Había perdido la vista de un ojo y logro recibir su trasplante para salvar su vida. Cuando pensamos que una persona tuvo que fallecer para recibir una parte de su cuerpo. Les contaré algo que no sabía y que me contó mi sobrino por una pregunta que le hice. Si él sabía de quien era el órgano que recibió. Y allí me contó que después de la operación tuvo extrañas pesadillas, se despertaba cuando alguien lo atacaba y sentía que moría. No quiso contarle a nadie, ni siquiera a su esposa lo que le estaba pasando en ese momento, pensó que lo tildarían de loco y lo dejarían en el hospital.

He had lost sight in one eye and managed to receive a transplant that saved his life. It’s sobering to think that someone else had to die for him to receive a part of their body. My nephew told me something I hadn’t known—something he shared after I asked him if he knew whose organ he had received. He explained that, following the operation, he began having strange nightmares; he would wake up feeling as though he were being attacked and dying. He didn’t want to tell anyone—not even his wife—about what he was going through, fearing that people would think he was insane and have him committed to a hospital.
