Una extraña mañana - A strange morning

Han pasado varios días desde que mi mamá me llamó la atención para que fuese a ver a mi amado Doki, que estaba babeando de manera muy extraña esa mañana. Fue la primera señal de que algo no estaba bien.

Empezamos a suponer que había comido algo que lo había intoxicado y me puse muy nerviosa creyendo que había sido envenenado. Enseguida llamé al veterinario que había esterilizado a mi gata y me indicó que antes de que él llegara, le diera a consumir carbón vegetal rallado. No demoré en dárselo. Mi peludo lo tomó con algo de sopa de pollo.

No se hasta cuánto se puede amar a un peludo, sólo sé que un tipo de amor verdadero se conoce a través de sus ojos. Desde ese día que empezaron los síntomas no tuve descando tratando de buscar la sanidad para mi fiel amigo.

We began to assume he had eaten something that had poisoned him and I became very nervous believing he had been poisoned. I immediately called the vet who had neutered my cat and he instructed me to feed her some grated charcoal before he arrived. I did not delay in giving it to her. My furry one drank it with some chicken soup.

I don't know how much you can love a furry, I just know that one kind of true love is known through their eyes. From the day the symptoms started I had no rest trying to find healing for my faithful friend.

The doctor's visit yielded no answers, however, he injected him with Dexamethasone and a medication to stabilize him. That calmed him down a bit. I observed him throughout the day, and the best part was that he had an appetite and drank a lot of water.

The night of that same day he had diarrhea which soon stopped and the doctor suggested blood tests to rule out any tick disease such as Babesiosis or Erlichiosis.

Al día siguiente los resultados de los exámenes arrojaron una Babesiosis y esa misma tarde el veterinario le inyectó Imidocarb para neutralizar el parásito. No obstante "mi amor hermoso", como yo lo llamaba, estaba decaído, temblaba y seguía babeando.
El médico me recomendó que estuviera pendiente si presentaba fiebre, lo cual era muy probable que estuviera pasando cuando temblaba.

Al mismo tiempo de estar Doki enfermo, me di cuenta que mis otros dos perritos pequeños tosían y se frotaban los ojos con las patitas, lo cual me resultó más intrigante. Lo consulté y fue la primera vez que el veterinario me mencionó la terrible palabra que no quería escuchar: moquillo. Me advirtió que en la zona estaba presente el virus.

The doctor recommended that I watch for a fever, which was most likely happening when he was shivering.

Around the same time Doki was sick, I noticed my other two little dogs coughing and rubbing their eyes with their paws, which was more intriguing to me. I consulted him and it was the first time the vet mentioned the terrible word I didn't want to hear: distemper. He warned me that the virus was present in the area.

En Venezuela actualmente una vacuna contra el Moquillo oscila entre los 25 y 30 dólares por dósis, lo que equivaldría a 5 sueldos mínimos aproximadamente. Es probable que esto haya hecho posible que el virus se expandiera de nuevo.

Empecé a investigar y leer todo lo que había en internet acerca del virus y comencé a atar cabos. Recordé que mi dálmata mestizo había presentado mucosidad semanas anteriores y estaba bajo de peso a pesar de estar alimentándolo mejor. En ocasiones estaba inapetente. Yo lo atribuía a gripe estacional porque en esa época llovía mucho.

Pasó poco tiempo para que mi perrito pequeño, igualmente mestizo, empezara a convulsionar con movimientos repetitivos de mandibula, lo que hizo que el médico confirmara el diagnóstico del Distemper.

Mis idas a la farmacia fueron muchas para abastecerme de antibióticos, antipiréticos, protector gástrico, antiinflamatorios esteroides, y finalmente anticonvulsivos.

Sucedieron días y horas muy duras y angustiosas, no hay palabras para describir lo altamente exigente que conllevaba atender tres perritos con Distemper. Me daba todo el día administrar los medicamentos y alimentos y terminaba a altas horas de la noche y comenzaba de nuevo muy temprano en la mañana.

It wasn't long before my little dog, also a mongrel, began to convulse with repetitive jaw movements, which led the doctor to confirm the diagnosis of Distemper.

My trips to the pharmacy were many to stock up on antibiotics, antipyretics, gastric protector, anti-inflammatory steroids, and finally anticonvulsants.

Days and hours were very hard and anxious, there are no words to describe how demanding it was to take care of three puppies with Distemper. It took me all day to administer the medications and food and I would finish late at night and start all over again very early in the morning.

I have a nurse friend who kindly assisted Doki by giving him IV fluids. It was his first time in animals and despite this, he did very well. But even the worst was not yet over.

Doki started convulsing minutes after hydration and from then on he was complaining every moment of pain, perhaps abdominal pain.

By this point, the vet had given up on me because his recommendation was to put them to sleep. I had to consult another doctor who put her on a painkiller and prescribed phenobarbital.

Una lucha perdida - A lost fight

Lastimosamente escuché de algunas personas las sugerencias de que me deshiciera de mis perritos enfermos, que los botara. Entiendo que esas personas que me decían eso, no conocen de la leltad y el amor que brinda un peludo.

No dejé de acariciar a mis amigos para mitigar el dolor que los afectaba, eso literalmente los calmaba como un bálsamo refrescante. Les hablaba, los alentaba a que comieran sus comidas líquidas y alguna vez llegué a cantarles.

Fueron dos semanas de angustia y dedicación total en un esfuerzo titánico por ganarle al Moquillo. En mi corazón siempre estuvo en pie la esperanza.

Mi perrito más joven y pequeño se fue primero. Sufrió una parálisis facial que derivó en complicaciones.

Estuve en vela las dos últimas noches antes de partir mi fiel y más antiguo amigo, no quería dejarlo solo por si ocurría un milagro que no ocurrió.

Unfortunately, I heard some people suggesting that I should get rid of my sick dogs, that I should throw them away. I understand that those people who told me that, do not know about the kindness and love that a furry dog gives.

I did not stop petting my friends to mitigate the pain that affected them, that literally soothed them like a refreshing balm. I talked to them, encouraged them to eat their liquid meals and even sang to them.

It was two weeks of anguish and total dedication in a titanic effort to beat Distemper. In my heart there was always hope.

My youngest and smallest puppy went first. He suffered a facial paralysis that led to complications.

I stayed awake the last two nights before my oldest and most faithful friend left, I did not want to leave him alone in case a miracle happened, but it did not.

De mis tres canes, mi perrita rescatada Susy, sobrevivió al ataque brutal del virus, la cual, aún está en recuperación y en completa observación.

Of my three dogs, my rescued dog Susy, who survived the brutal attack of the virus, is still recovering and under full observation.

Every day at home we miss our loves and companions along the way. I am sure that it was God who allowed these special beings to become the best friends of humans.

Al pasar por este proceso pude determinar varias reflexiones:

La manera más eficaz para luchar contra el Distemper es vacunando a nuestros cachorros. Ésta debe roforzarse cada cierto tiempo, según lo indique el veterinario. Resulta más económico que combatir la enfermedad.

Es importante mantener a nuestra mascotas bien alimentadas con vitaminas y nutrientes y comida saludable que ayude a su sistema inmune.

No es fácil determinar con los primeros síntomas si nuestro perro contrajo moquillo, pero un diagnóstico temprano puede salvar a nuestra mascota.

Al tener mascotas, debemos ser más responsable con sus vidas, esto nos restará sufrimientos, tanto para los animales como para nosotros mismos.

It is not easy to determine with the first symptoms if our dog has contracted distemper, but an early diagnosis can save our pet.

By having pets, we must be more responsible with their lives, this will reduce suffering, both for the animals and for ourselves.
