Un almuerzo delicioso frente al mar | A delicious lunch by the sea 🌊🏖😋

Hello, hello, foodies, how’s it going? I don’t have a recipe for you today, but I am going to talk about food. Yesterday, after meeting with some clients—in my capacity as a lawyer—they invited me to lunch, and since we were near Juan Griego, we went to a little spot called Frente al Mar, a small restaurant that truly lives up to its name, since it’s located right on the ocean, in part of the beautiful Juan Griego Bay, in the municipality of Marcano on Margarita Island, Venezuela.

Although this place is called Frente al Mar, it’s popularly known as El Mejillón, so if you’re visiting Margarita Island, keep this in mind—though honestly, the name doesn’t really matter, since once you get there, the view is the real star. In fact, I completely forgot to take photos of the facade—or even the more intimate part of the restaurant—since, of course, we didn’t stay there; instead, we decided to sit in the area right on the waterfront.

This restaurant has two distinct areas: one is a bit more private—it’s the one you see as soon as you walk in, with a few tables—and the other is practically right on the water’s edge. In fact, if you go down the stairs, you can feel the waves lapping at your feet.

And just as the view is incredible, so is the menu, which offers, of course, all kinds of seafood specialties—from soups to fish stews, the traditional “fosforera,” fried fish (whole or in slices), calamari, shrimp, and the list goes on.

I’m particularly fond of shrimp and calamari, so I already knew what I was going to order, and luckily there was a mixed plate of battered calamari and shrimp, which I paired with a shredded salad and steamed potatoes with parsley and butter. The rest of my dining companions enjoyed garlic calamari and grilled carite.

I’ll tell you, I tried a little bit of everything, and just like my dish, they were absolutely delicious—incredibly fresh, not to mention the seasoning. The flavor of the squid and shrimp filled your mouth, and combined with the crispy texture, it was an explosion of flavors and textures. Plus, they were cooked to perfection—because both squid and shrimp need to be cooked just the right amount of time; otherwise, their texture is completely ruined. But that wasn’t the case with my dish, which, honestly, was a 10/10.

As for the prices, honestly, considering the type of dishes and the fact that we were enjoying them by the sea, I found them quite fair and in line with the quality, service, and atmosphere. For example, my dish—which, as you can see, was quite substantial—cost $16, and my companions’ dishes ranged from $14 to $10. While I’d say they’re a bit pricey, they’re really worth it. Luckily, I was there as a guest đŸ€Ł

In conclusion, this little magical spot pleasantly surprised me, and I would definitely recommend it without hesitation because it perfectly showcases the richness of our island’s cuisine. So if you’re in Margarita—or coming to visit—you should definitely check out the popular restaurant El Mejillón.
