Con la llegada de la navidad he estado haciendo algunas manualidades en casa, pero también un poco de bricolaje, que saben es de mis cosas favoritas, y en esta oportunidad les quiero compartir la transformación de una mesa de noche o mesa de luz como le dicen dn otros lugares, y aunque para mí fue un trabajo bastante sencillo tiene algunas técnicas geniales que pensé les podían interesar, ademas que el cambio fue del cielo a la tierra, y definitivamente amé el resultado por lo que no dudé en compartirlo con ustedes, así que por aquí les dejo la transformación de una mesita de noche.

With Christmas approaching, I've been doing some crafts at home, but also a little DIY, which you know is one of my favorite things to do. This time, I want to share with you the transformation of a nightstand, or bedside table as it's called in other places. Although it was a fairly simple job for me, it involves some great techniques that I thought you might find interesting. Plus, the change was like night and day, and I absolutely loved the result, so I didn't hesitate to share it with you. So, here's the transformation of a nightstand.

Esta mesita es originalmente de pino, y tiene unos cuantos años en casa, ya que era parte del juego de cuarto que tenía en mi adolescencia, pero como pueden ver justo antes de la restauración estaba pintada de blanco, y esto fue porque decidí hacerla parte del mobiliario del cuarto que preparamos para mi hijo Matías cuando nos enteramos de su llegada, y como todos sus muebles eran blancos decidí pintarla.

La cosa es que solo estuvo dos años ahí porque cuando él estaba por cumplir los 3 años, nació mi hija Miranda y cambiamos toda la habitación incluidos los muebles y desde ese momento la mesita de noche estuvo sin uso en una de las habitaciones de la casa, hasta que al fin le llegó su hora de brillar nuevamente, dándole un estilo vintage que logré gracias a la utilización de un tono verde menta para las gavetas, adicional al uso de dos técnicas bastante geniales como son el decapé y el lavado que completaron el look antiguo de esta mesita. Así que sigan leyendo para que se enteren cómo lo hice.

This nightstand is originally made of pine, and it has been in our home for quite a few years, as it was part of the bedroom set I had when I was a teenager. But as you can see, just before the restoration, it was painted white, and this was because I decided to make it part of the furniture in the room we prepared for my son Matías when we found out he was coming, and since all his furniture was white, I decided to paint it.

The thing is, it only stayed there for two years because when he was about to turn 3, my daughter Miranda was born, and we changed the entire room, including the furniture. From that moment on, the nightstand was unused in one of the rooms of the house until finally its time came to shine again, giving it a vintage style that I achieved by using a mint green tone for the drawers, in addition to two pretty cool techniques, decapé and washing, which completed the antique look of this nightstand. Como les comenté arriba, el mayor cambio de la mesita de noche estaría concentrado en sus gavetas, las cuales cambiarían de blanco a verde menta y aplicaría el efecto "decapé" del que les hablé arriba, que no es más que pintar la pieza en dos tonos contrastantes para luego dejar secar y con ayuda de una lija exponer el tono que tenemos abajo, creando un efecto de "capas" de colores que aparte de verse muy lindo, lo hace lucir desgastado y envejecido. Detalles característicos del estilo vintage.

En mi caso, lo primero que hice para dar el cambio a estas gavetas, fue limpiarlas y darles dos capas de verde menta dejando el tirador en su color blanco.

As I mentioned above, the biggest change to the nightstand would be concentrated on its drawers, which would change from white to mint green, and I would apply the "decqpé" effect effect I mentioned above, which is simply painting the piece in two contrasting colors, letting it dry, and then using sandpaper to expose the color underneath, creating a layered color effect that not only looks very nice but also gives it a worn and aged look. These are characteristic details of the vintage style.

In my case, the first thing I did to change these drawers was to clean them and give them two coats of mint green, leaving the handles white.

Después de dejarlas secar muy bien el siguiente paso es exponer el otro color que tenemos debajo, que en el caso de estas gavetas no solo era el blanco, sino el color original de la mesita que también quería dejar a la vista en algunos espacios, para lo que se utiliza la lija, la de grano medio de las tres que usé que sería la 500, pero como yo siempre busco ahorrar tiempo y lo del lijado demoraba, use la tijera para retirar pintura y finalmente utilicé la lija más fina para "emparejar" la superficie.

After letting them dry thoroughly, the next step is to expose the other color underneath, which in the case of these drawers was not only white, but also the original color of the table, which I also wanted to leave visible in some areas. For this, I used sandpaper, the medium-grit of the three I used, which would be 500 grit. But since I always try to save time and sanding took too long, I used scissors to remove the paint and finally used the finest sandpaper to "even out" the surface.

De esta forma ya las gavetas estarían prácticamente listas, solo pinté los tiradores de blanco y una vez secos expuse algunas zonas en las que se deja ver la madera. Y ahora sí las gavetas están listas y nos vamos a concentrar en el armazón de la mesita.

At this point, the drawers were practically finished. I just painted the handles white and, once they were dry, exposed some areas where the wood was visible. Now the drawers are ready, and we can focus on the frame of the table.

Inicialmente mi idea era retirar toda la pintura blanca de la parte de arriba y el resto de la mesita pintarla de color negro, ya que de esa forma están pintadas las repisas que tengo en el espacio donde iría la mesita, una combinación de tres colores: menta, negro y madera clara, pero luego de eliminar la capa blanca de la parte de arriba, decidí que blanca lucía perfecta, así que me olvidé del negro, pero conociéndome, no lo descartaría 😂

En fin, para este paso usé la lija de grano más grueso y por supuesto a mi lijador estrella, el bateador designado... mi esposo 😂

Él se encargó de retirar toda la pintura blanca y traer a la vida al color original de la mesita, quitando de una vez el barniz que hace que el pino luzca como naranja, dejándolo con su apariencia natural.

Initially, my idea was to remove all the white paint from the top and paint the rest of the table black, since that's how the shelves are painted in the space where the table would go, a combination of three colors: mint, black, and light wood. But after removing the white layer from the top, I decided that white looked perfect, so I forgot about the black, but knowing me, I wouldn't rule it out 😂

Anyway, for this step, I used the coarsest sandpaper and, of course, my star sander, the designated hitter... my husband 😂

He took care of removing all the white paint and bringing the original color of the table back to life, removing the varnish that makes the pine look orange, leaving it with its natural appearance.

Cuando mi esposo subió la mesita, me di cuenta que había olvidado decirle que quería algunos pocos rastros de la pintura blanca, y él había hecho tan buen trabajo que no le dejó ni un poquito de blanco, así que decidí hacer un "lavado" para solucionar el problema, y esta es una técnica bien sencilla en la que diluyes la pintura con agua para "aligerarla" y la aplicas por pequeños sectores de la superficie y retiras con un paño seco, siempre en la dirección de la veta de la madera, hasta "lavar", todo el espacio que necesitas.

En mi caso quería usar esta técnica en la parte superior de la mesita, y para aplicar la pintura blanca decidí utilizar una esponja para que el proceso fuese más rápido y también porque no quería demasiado blanco. Así que "aclaré" la pintura blanca, humedecí solo un poco la esponja y la pasé en una sola dirección sobre la madera ocupando un espacio pequeño y de inmediato pasé el paño seco sobre la pintura quedando justo el efecto que buscaba.

Tip: si notan que el color es más oscuro de lo que estaban buscando solo deben pasar un paño húmedo inmediatamente para retirar la pintura, esperan a que la madera seque bien y continúan con el trabajo.

When my husband brought up the table, I realized I had forgotten to tell him that I wanted a few traces of the white paint, and he had done such a good job that he didn't leave even a little bit of white, so I decided to do a "wash" to solve the problem. This is a very simple technique in which you dilute the paint with water to "lighten" it and apply it to small areas of the surface. Then, you remove it with a dry cloth, always in the direction of the wood grain, until you have "washed" the entire area you need.

In my case, I wanted to use this technique on the top of the table, and to apply the white paint I decided to use a sponge to speed up the process and also because I didn't want too much white. So I "lightened" the white paint, dampened the sponge just a little, and rubbed it in one direction over the wood, covering a small area, and immediately wiped the paint with a dry cloth, achieving just the effect I was looking for.

Tip: if you notice that the color is darker than you wanted, just wipe it with a damp cloth immediately to remove the paint, wait for the wood to dry thoroughly, and continue with the job.

Listo este paso, ya solo quedaba pintar de blanco el resto de la mesita, a la que no le hice ningún trabajo adicional para no recargar el mueble. Dejé secar bien, y con la lija más fina lijé toda la superficie del mueble para retirar cualquier veta de pintura y darle un acabado más suave y prolijo, y con esto ya estuvo lista mi restauración. Coloqué dos de mis cactus, unos libros y un porta retrato con temática navideña y listo, mesita nueva.

Once this step was complete, all that remained was to paint the rest of the table white, which I did without adding any additional work so as not to overload the piece. I let it dry thoroughly, then sanded the entire surface with the finest sandpaper to remove any paint streaks and give it a smoother, neater finish. And with that, my restoration was complete. I placed two of my cacti, some books, and a Christmas-themed picture frame on it, and voilà, a new table.
