Was This The Best Breakfast I have Ever Had At A Cafe?

I'm a huge fan of breakfasts and I'm a mean breakfast cook, if I do say so myself. From vegetarian fry ups to paratha with lime pickle and curds, or congee wet with sesame oil and spring onions, pancakes drizzled with honey and lime, breakfast is a fun thing to cook and I've entertained the idea of opening a breakfast only cafe that shuts at 11 with a menu that is both whimsically and seasonally variable.

So when I eat out, I can be fussy about breakfasts. Sometimes I'd rather just plain scrambled eggs as at least you know it'll be good. But in Australia, we can be spoilt for choice and honestly, cafes here do some of the best breakfasts in the world.

On a recent trip, we stayed the night in the coastal town of Port Fairy, and chose to eat at a cafe called Banks and Co, central to town, and quite busy - a sign of a popular eatery.

The interior was clean and white, adorned with various artworks that were for sale. My favourite was a photograph of a surfbreak and an old car.

When the coffees came, they were perfect - I love a soy latte and they used Bonsoy which is my favourite. I hate it when cafes skimp on soy and buy the cheaper brands. The coffee never tastes as good. This coffee was perfect - not too bitter, strong and not too milky, hot and lip smackingly good as we waited for our breakfasts and admire a huge photograph of a whale. We were in the area to look for whales but that's another story.

But let's cut to my breakfast order, shall we? I was tempted by the house made granola or the usual smashed avo on toast with fetta which is a very common Aussie brekky staple, but I decided to order something which sounded delicious but a little unusual, and I was craving greens. It was roast pumpkin with a coconut dukkah, rested on a bed of garlicky greens with fetta and two poached eggs.

Honest to goodness this breakfast was next level amazing. The vegetables - lightly wilted spinach, firm and sweet peas, rounds of crisp and sweet zucchini - were cooked to perfection, the pumpkin had been sweetly roasted so it was caramelized, and my eggs were perfectly hardboiled. I hate runny yolks and often send them back, much to my husband's embarrassment, but as I say, if I order hard boiled eggs the kitchen should pay attention and not serve runny ones!

Jamie, however, ordered eggs hollondaise with Otway bacon, which he said was amazing too. Both meals were around 20 dollars (with the coffee, the meal came to $50) which is standard for a good cafe sit down breakfast.

Honestly I savoured every bite of this meal, and was stuffed at the end. I lost count of how many times I said it was in my top 5 best breakfasts ever. Truly a taste sensation.

My son and I always send each other photos of breakfast - his last effort was avocado with caramelized onions and my own homemade sriracha - so of course I sent him this one to make him drool. I'll definitely eat here next time we head to Port Fairy.

What is the best cafe breakfast you have ever had?

With Love,

Hey @riverflows
so tempting.jpg

I have to agree that the Aussie Brekkie is some of the best that I have ever seen. It's a proper cook-up with greens and all. I love the way they do sweet potatoes, and now this is another creative idea with pumpkin.

If you should ever open that cafe, which is a brilliant idea, I would be the first in line.

The combination is unique for me, VERY different from a full English Brekkie for sure, but I would opt for any of these because they look so healthy and rounded with all the right nutrients...and the coffee mugs are appealing too:)))
If I ever make it to that part of the world, Breakfast would be one of the things that I would look forward to the most!

Oh yes the mugs were lovely too! Haha no baked beans or white bread toast here.... Honestly it was delicious.

It would have made a good dinner or lunch too!

Smashed avo and fetta is good. Google modern Australian breakfasts.. otherwise you might just end up with Vegemite on toast!

Ok, I'm yet to try Vegemite, but I'm not a fan of Marmite, so I'm not sure if it's something I'd like 🤣

Pizza for breakfast is great!

You can always tell me what your favourite or typical breakfast is...I'd be interested in what Russians have for breakfast!

ha! I dunno what to tell, not sure I am something unique... I like smth fast with less efforts involved, like milk + muesli, or milk + cornflakes, or simply oatmeal with some jam. and of course a cup of tea, thats a must. I like coffee, but making it in jezzwa takes time, its a ritual for me, so if I go to the office, I often skip the coffee part, until I came back home or have time...

by the way, let me welcome you to enjoy some pics in this old post, -- it is exactly about my morning coffee with cheesecakes -- that is typical when we have time and a leizure morning 😜

With such a breakfast, there is definitely no need for any lunch. Although I have just finished my lunch, I am feeling hungry again :D

Aussie brekkie looks really good also, like you, soy latte is my guilty pleasure haha. They are good and just unfortunate they are only available in bigger cities. So, what I normally do is make my own soy latte or even almond at home.

I had a favourite cafe in Fremantle, that done such great breakfasts.
Yours sounds and looks amazing, minus the eggs for me though.
It's so hot here now, that it's fruit salad and yogurt for breakfast right now, which I love xxxxx

I was going to say no need for eggs, in fact I only had half of one. I don't object if they are local and free range and always check.

Yuuuuumm fruit salad and yoghurt wins. I've been craving green smoothies but it seems too cold.
