Secret Spots on The Great Ocean Road: Walking Aireys to Sunnymead Beach

avatar

The Great Ocean Road is a stunning part of southern Australia, and if you're lucky enough to live near it, it's fantastic for a walk, either along many of it's gorgeous beaches, cliff tops, or both! Now that lockdown has ended, there's a lot more people doing just that. Luckily we know a few quieter spots where people don't go as much, unless they are local! We decided to do a Sunday walk with my parents, from Aireys Inlet township to Sunnymead Beach, a gorgeous quiet little beach that's hard to find unless you know exactly where it is.

We started in town as we wanted to come back to the fish and chip shop for lunch (more on this later). From there it's about a kilometre to the lighthouse, where there is a lovely tea shop if that's the kind of lunch you'd prefer. The shot below is taken on the way back, because I didn't bust out my camera until then, but you can see the lighthouse and the distinctive island in the sea. On this day, the sea was quite rough, but that didn't stop us looking out for the distinctive spout of whales that you can often see from these cliff tops.

The track along the top takes you through tea trees and scrub all the way to Sunnymead beach. If you so fancy, you can stop at any of the lookouts on the way or walk along the road adjacent where you can feel pangs of jealousy for the houses there that look over the sea and now fetch millions of dollars. Coastal properties have gone up enormously since COVID. Look at the properties below that are in the next town along - ouch!!!

When we finally got to Sunnymead, we were pretty tired - especially my parents who are getting alot older. To their credit, they soldier on because fitness is important, as is adventure!

After a rest, we walked to the end of the beach where there's a cool tunnel that goes through the cliffs. ON still days you can jump into the water and catch a wave through, but this day was pretty cold and rough so we were NOT tempted whatsoever.

I love this photo of my Dad and husband standing above the tunnel. Time passes so quickly, that sometimes I feel it'll be the last photo I'll take of my old man, but hey, he's looking pretty fit for a 74 year old, don't you think?

I love the colour of the cliffs against the ocean on this stretch of the Great Ocean Road - the deep reds look incredible against blue. I recently got a circular polarising filter and a filter that makes the sea smooth out, so I'm looking forward to returning to getting some more artistic shots.

Back to the carpark meant that we did about 10 kilometres, and enjoyed fantastic fish and chips. I hadn't been to that fish and chippery before but it was a really good one. I had fish tacos whilst Jamie had a burger and my folks had standard fish and potato cakes. I was far too hungry to take a photo, but you might like to check out their website here.

If I hadn't just had my own weekend adventure, I'd be really envious! As is, I'm still a wee bit as we have to drive a ways if we want to see the ocean. Sounds like time well spent. Love that your parents are still so active. It truly does keep you young!

Wow! This reminds me of cali and the pacific coast highway. Not that i would compare. I always wanted to go down under and to Japan. Still on my bucket list. The cliffs are reminiscent to palos verdes. Or further north towards Pismo. This is an excellent travel lead. Thank you for sharing. Wonderful pictures.

These photos are so beautiful and so inviting for a visitation.
However, as a foodie, the food photo won my heart.

Great post @riverflows
