Bambra Wetlands: Wednesday Walk

avatar

I'd felt like absolute rubbish on this morning when I got up, and the best cure for me for feeling rubbish is to disapper into nature. I was going mushroom hunting, but it was quite dry and I wasn't sure I'd actually find anything, but a walk was still the best cure I could think of.

On my way to the pine forests, looking for edible mushrooms, I stopped by a small park on the way to Lorne where a parcel of land had been set aside for educational wetlands. I learnt the words 'ephemeral wetlands' meaning they dry off in the summer and are wetter in the rainier weather.

I think my favourite thing about the walk, which only takes fifteen minutes at most, was this bench. It was carved with native animals, including the shy platypus.

There were also poles that were carved and featured a little bit of information about various animals, such as snakes, and a native long necked turtle.

Speaking of snakes, in true Australian fashion, signs were put up to warn of the possibility of snakes. Perhaps they were more there for tourists who might stop there on the way to the coast. Any Aussie knows to be cautious about snakes in the bush. Note in true nanny state fashion, they also felt it was important to warn people of bees and not to slip. I also had to laugh at the stick lent up against the sign. Is that a snake beating stick? Lol. I don't think anyone had been through for a while as I kept getting hit in the face by cobwebs. They failed to mention that on the sign.

There were also a few signs that labelled the trees. In all honestly, the art was the best part of the wetlands and the rest was pretty ho hum. I had a better time when I escaped to more wilder areas, and found the mushrooms I was after. But that's for another story.

With Love,

Going for a walk in nature still is the best cure for a blues-day!
Snakes I'm terrified of so I'd be wearing gumboots, even the harmless ones frighten me!

Ha I never even see them! You kinda just know how to move when you grow up here. Stomp stomp, and beware of grass. You'd have to be unlucky to get bit!

I once saw a snake in my toilet and ever since then... I've been traumatized by em!

So hell nah, if by chance I should ever go walking in a forest in Australia and I come across one of those snake warning signs – you can then best be sure I'll take a hard turn back!

You're brave River.

Oh my goodness - a snake in my toilet would make me crap my pants, ironically enough!!!! Haha, I don't even think about it. My English husband is always saying 'be careful of snakes' and of course i AM careful, but seriously don't consciously think about it!

Ha! Ironically indeed XD!

Well, I'm not entirely sure if it's an Aussie thing, but I'm certain most people would be hella thinking about it! Especially when there's LITERALLY a sign that says:

Warning! Poisonous snakes around. They WILL bite ya!

I love the snek. Australia both fascinates me and terrifies me. Our snakes and creepy crawlers are not too dangerous and kind of cute. Yours, on the other hand, are both fascinating and very bitey. 😅

It's what people fear the most about this country but honestly you don't even think about it here. WE don' thave cougars, bears or any other dangerous things and a few snakes and spiders don't get in your way at all!!

Bears and cougars are cuddly, just not with humans.

Lol, actually someone asked about mushroom finding on a local FAcebook forum and I said I'd seen the magic kind, and I got sooo many personal messages asking me where. Go find them yourself, I replied - that's half the fun!!! I'm not doing their work for them - we didn' thave the internet to find gold tops when we were kids!

Nature and time are the best healers, my opinion. Not long ago I stumbled upon an article on the web that said that it is highly useful to go for a walk every single time for at least 1 hour. That is why when I see any sort of rubbish in the local forest I thoroughly collect it and call https://anylondonwaste.co.uk/ to remove it! Nature should always remain prestine!
