Hello friends, I hope you are doing well.
This is the story of a young woman named Lisa, who after living with her grandparents for a while, decided to leave in order to pursue her goals, but that decision didn't work out as she had hoped. Lisa blames herself every day for that decision, but she has decided to forgive herself and move on. Do you want to know what decision Lisa made and what she has had to forgive herself for?.
Lisa lived in a small town with her parents, who were poor, so going to college was complicated for a change. She wanted very much to start college. Lisa's aunt and uncle knew her desire to study, so they offered her the opportunity to work taking care of her own grandparents, -they lived in the city- Lisa saw the opportunity of a lifetime, she thought that if she accepted she would achieve what she wanted so much, her college career!
Lisa accepted to take care of her grandparents and leave her parents. As everything in the beginning was beautiful, Lisa began to pursue the college degree she had longed for. Her new occupation allowed her to pay for her studies and personal expenses and at the same time take care of her beloved grandparents. Her work consisted of: maintaining the house, cooking meals and taking care of the grandparents' treatment. She also informed her aunt and uncle of her needs.
Everything was going well, Lisa was already in her third year of her career. The three of them began to have a deep affection for each other. Grandma was the grandmother that many would wish to have, very loving and understanding. But everything started to change, grandpa -who was very deaf because of his age- started to change his attitude, everything bothered him and he even demanded more from Lisa. When he brought her his cup of coffee, he would end up throwing the cup on the floor, he would yell at her and it bothered him that Lisa would use the night light to study.
In order not to bother him, she decided to study with the light reflecting from a small black and white TV set. Grandpa, as usual, took his nap in the afternoons, so he didn't notice when Lisa arrived, when he woke up he thought it was too late and started to yell at her and ask her what time she had arrived, doubting that she wouldn't be in her classes. Thus, it became difficult for Lisa to continue with her studies.
One day her parents came to visit Lisa, but found her very sad, and her worried parents asked her what was wrong. She, still eager to continue taking care of her beloved grandmother and continue her studies, was hesitant to tell her parents what was happening. But with tears in her eyes she confessed to them what she had had to endure for the past few months.
Her father, very angry, told her that enough was enough, that it wasn't fair, that she should return home with them. But Lisa did not want to leave her grandmother alone, as she had grown very fond of her. Even so, they decided to talk to Lisa's aunt and uncle so that they could find someone else to take care of them. They found one of Lisa's cousins, but the grandparents began to notice that it was not the same and began to complain and ask Lisa to come back, because she had been very patient with them.
Lisa went to visit them and every time she went, her grandmother asked her to come back. Lisa was determined not to go through the same thing again. Unfortunately, grandma got sick, according to the doctors, it was emotional. Lisa found out and went to visit her in the hospital, but the diagnoses were not at all pleasant. The whole family set out to help Grandma by scheduling times to take turns taking care of her at the hospital. While Grandpa was left home alone, everyone thought Grandpa would be fine. One day Grandpa fell and lay on the floor for a long time, because in his attempt to get up he had a serious fracture.
An aunt who found him on the floor sought help and took him to the hospital, the fracture would not allow him to walk anymore, because of his advanced age he could not endure surgery.
Both grandparents were cared for at home by their daughters, because the responsibility was greater. Grandpa did not take his treatment, he said not to extend his life in that condition. He died 22 days after the fall and Lisa's grandmother lasted a few more months in poor health until she died.
Lisa completed her studies, but she still remembers that bad experience with great sadness. She continually struggles not to let those memories overwhelm her. Every day she forgives herself for a decision that did not turn out to be in her grandparents' best interest.
