Power outage, unplanned power production, and supply chain - An uncertain road we are taking.

avatar

We are facing a power outage for the past few days. The government announced a schedule for the country to cut of electricity because of the lack of current production. Sounds unbelievable, I know. But this is the reality for many Asian countries now.

Power outage/load shedding is nothing new here. But usually, the capital city and the major areas don't go out of electricity. Because of the high price of the gas in the global market, the government can't produce more and so can't distribute.

The specialists were saying this for decades, 'we should focus on alternative power production like solar power.' But no government took that seriously. Also, the unplanned distribution network made the situation worse. Millions of 'auto-rickshaws' are charging their batteries for the whole night all over the world. What a wastage of electricity.

This is the photo I took from my hometown a few months ago. There are millions of autorickshaws like what you are seeing in the photos available all over the country. I never liked this as a public vehicle. This is a high-risk vehicle for accidents too. And no need to explain how much electricity they are using every day.

I don't know how unplanned a system can be!

Also, the man-pulled rickshaws are now run with a mini motor that needs to be charged with electricity.

The government never think about creating real jobs/employment for millions of rickshaw pullers so they can shift their career.

Everything is messed up here. The unfortunate thing is, seems like there is no pro[er plan.

A temporary power cut is never a solution. The math is simple, if we can't afford to buy more gas to produce electricity then we must look for alternatives. That's where we are lacking.

And as I said, it's not just for us but a reality for many underdeveloped and developing countries.

An uncertain road we have taken. There is still time to make a proper plan so we don't have to see the worse. I wouldn't say the govt is not trying. But there should be many more positive signs if they listened earlier. In this heat wave, it's unbearable to live without electricity. Also, it's impacting production as well. I wish we could use this strong sunlight and reduce our dependability on traditional power sources.

Things must change for the better.

The load shedding in so many countries is ridiculous, all these countries should have had solar investment years ago and ugraded the infrastructure. As usual it is the ordinary citizen who suffer from the inept and corrupt politicians in charge:(
Those rickshaws are well an experience I will say 🤣🤣🤣

Solar should be our priority but unfortunately, they are still very costly. Because the govt never focused on using alternative energy sources.
And about the rickshaw, it's quite an experience here. hehehe...

That is the problem, people say the initial cost is too expensive, so nothing gets done, except the exisiting gets worse and worse!
Yeah I have been in similar rickshaws and yes I can imagine🤣🤣🤣

The govt can give subsidiaries in solar and alternative energy but they will never because coal miners/gas importers will be mad about this. This is happening for decades.
Btw, I love rickshaw ride sometimes, when the weather is good; I can enjoy the breeze and the open sky.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Have a good day 🌸☀️

It was the same here, the only way things changed was when oil and gas companies started to buy into the natural resources companies. Still though it is a very slow progress.
I hope something gets done for you guys soon.
Ah yes when the weather is good, everything becomes fun:)
Thank you and enjoy your week:)

This has been a common problem of each of our local government, to make short-sighted projects and to just band-aid ongoing issues as they encounter it. Our local electricity cooperative opted for coal ($0.07 then, now $0.29) instead of geothermal (stable $0.07), now they are stuck with fossil fuel because of their contract and electricity has doubled since the pandemic started.

Going green isn't the top of the priority, even if if geothermal remained cheap until now. And the officials hate whining people when things go bad, but they continue to bad decisions in the comfort of white airconditioned offices and paid $$$ for it.

Also, more companies are pushing to end WFH to make their employees back on site, but that isn't feasible, they can save more with less overhead costs and other opex.

In 2018, I started my minimalism journey, but was too late to build a sustainable home. When I started planning to be offgrid during the start of the pandemic, I no longer had enough budget to pursue solar power. I wish started earlier! hahah

Things are the same here, we are paying almost 3-4 times more than what we used to pay even 5 years ago. Govt will never try to do the right thing for their own interest and to keep their friends (businessmen) in their hands.
I wish I could go back. But I'm almost stuck here in the capital. There are not many employment opportunities in the countryside.
Also, solar costs a lot here. All the bright sunlight for 4-5 months is going wastage anyway.

Thanks for sharing your thoughtful feedback. Have a good day.

Intermittent rolling blackouts have been happening in South Africa since 2008, politicians never get their act together and do a proper days work or planning, hope your region is not going down the same road.

Perhaps soon the Rickshaws will convert back to man power by pedal or pull as originally designed.

Oh, I thought it was a South Asian problem only. Sorry to hear you. I agree the govt never takes the right option to meet the business owner's interests.
I wish the rickshaw puller could find an alternative way of earning. After some age, rickshaw pulling makes them weak and they can't get other jobs or do anything because of that.
Thanks for your thoughtful sharing.

Becoming a problem in many parts of the world supply completely outstripped by demand. Forcing a world into new technology that is electricity dependent yet no infrastructure in place.

I agree.
Hope the lesson we are learning would be a good use in the future.
