(My baby niece)

As a child I was really very clumsy, like my mother will say then, rookie you are too scatter scatter
I was a playful child and I might say a little dare devil too even tho I was a girl.

For this weeks’ contest from the #weekendcommunity by @galenkp, I have scars to show for my childhood wildness till date. That is why I happily choose the question

Childhood accidents
Were you a daredevil as a kid? Tell us about a time when you did something stupid or dangerous before you were fifteen that didn't go well for you, or you got away with against all odds. Give us the scenario, what happened to you and what resulted from your actions. Bonus points for humour and your own photos.

Story time? Please be sitted with your popcorn for this particular story Lol

In the first house we lived in as a child, before we moved to my dads built house, there was a mango tree in the compound.
A very big mango tree, one that was very much fruitful.

In the mango season we would have really ripe juicy mangoes from it, children on the street where we lived would come to throw things at the tree just to get its juicy mango for themselves.

We that owned the tree inside our
compound, we would On some days wake you to meet so many ripe mangoes had fallen over night especially if it was a very windy night, it would shake down the really ripe mangoes and we would meet them all over the ground of the compound in the morning.

Then we would take it upon ourselves to wake up really early so that we can pick them up before our neighbors who we shared the compound with wakes up and picks all of them.

We lived in a three bedroom flat and we were in the up flat, so we could actually really see the top of the tree, sometimes from our balcony we would sight really ripe mangoes that hasn’t fallen yet and we would get a very long pole and shake the branch till such mango falls off to the ground.

I must admit, that mango tree was part of the things that made my childhood fun and enjoyable, I love mangoes a lot and I loved that I had my own tree for it.

One day I was home alone, and I was sitting at the balcony when I saw that there were really ripe mangoes inside the tree that the pole my elder brother usally used to shake the branch couldn’t get to. Sometimes if it happens that the pole can’t get to the mango we want, my elder brother will proceed to climb the tree and shake the branch himself or even pluck it from the source itself.

On that particular day I was home alone, I decided to climb the tree myself too to pluck the mangoes I was sighting from the top. I thought to myself after all my elder brother does it so why not.

Now the fence of my compound had barbwires all around it, for those who do not know what a barb wire is, it is a protective fence wire, it can be connected to electricity to give a shock effect to intruders.

I used to watch my elder brother very closely when he is climbing the tree, I knew all the corners he would first place his leg before lifting himself up to the tree, so I was quite confident. The only thing that I did not foresee is that the barbwire was going to cut deep into the flesh of my arm.

Yes that’s what happened,

I had successfully lifted myself up to the tree quite alright, but as soon as I tried to climb to the next branch, I discovered the barbwire had cut into my arm, foolish child in me quickly pulled my arms away from it and that was when it tore open my arm.
That day I saw blood, my blood, it was really red, at first the pain did not hit me, I jumped down from the tree immediately and went to use water to wash it, but the blood did not stop. I now used a cloth to hold my arm and cover the blood but still the blood was soaking the cloth.

(my arm scar)

As the lord will have it, my mum came a few minutes into all this blood bath I was having, She was saw me outside crying and she saw my blood soaked arm, she asked what happened I told her very reluctantly that I tried to climb the tree.

Trust my mom, her first response was

very good, that is very good for you, Enter the car let’s go to the pharmacy, they will give you Titanus injection, because the barbwire is a rusted iron

I humbly entered the car and on getting to the pharmacy they stitched up my arm, gave me injections, and also some pain killers because I was already feeling so much pain at that point.

When my dad got home later that evening and my mom reported me, he took one look at the hand and said to me

this injury will leave a scar on this arm forever, and anytime you look at the scar you will remember your foolishness

Till today, His words stuck and truly everytime i take a look at the scar on my arm or am asked what gave me the scar , my dads words echo in my head and I truly remember how wild and confident I felt that day.

It did not stop me from loving mangoes tho, but I was definitely more careful after that day .

Were you a daredevil as a child ?

Thank you for reading this post
See you in my next

Ps: I have permission to post my baby niece pictures

When you said you mom came to witness the accident, I felt scared on your behalf. My mom would’ve spanked me as we head to the hospital 😂
Well what is childhood without taking risks? I believe it’s the fact that we had no idea our actions has consequences that makes us do what we do. Because how do you climb a wall guarded with barb wires!! 😂

Your dad’s words though, “You will look at the scar and remember your foolishness” hahaha

Oh my, it even left you a scar...

And I giggled reading this:

very good, that is very good for you

I often hear these words from other moms when their kids hurt themselves after they did things that they were told not to do.
