A Dime A Dozen

I've often heard the expression, "Words are a dime a dozen" when someone talks on and on not saying anything that makes sense.

A dime a dozen is really just a figure of speech. A dime, being a small amount of money, might refer to anything you think is worthless such as hearing someone speaking a lot of mumbo jumbo without sincerity.

When was the last time When someone was speaking and you thought,

”I wish he/she would get to the point and quite beating around the bush?

Beating around the bush is another idiom used in everyday speech. The English language has lots of them. For E.G. Actions speak louder than words.

The English language is changing more than ever with the age of computers and cellphones.

I still remember the first message I got on my computer with the the three letters, LOL. I had no idea what it meant and asked my niece who informed me it was laugh out loud.

I’m from the old school where using proper English was instilled in my brain by strict classroom teachers but all that has gone by the wayside with the short forms used in texting and the omitting of capital letters to save time.

E.g, I could text “Where r u?” Meaning where are you?

FYI (for your information) I still have a lot of words to learn the short form of but I’m slowly catching on.

New technology has brought about a new language to shorten like we had Pitman Shorthand! Failed it outright and vaguely remember only one symbol, thank goodness with every age there is a stage, I think this new symbol status is possibly easier to learn LOL....

Fun read for free write.

Hi Joan @joanstewart. These new short cut symbols seem to be easy once you get the hang of them. The only thing is when I go to write in a card to send to someone, I am still in the shorter word mindset. LOL

We forget what we want to say, yes agree writing a letter takes a lot longer, much easier to type. Still don't like corrective text, prefer to clean my own language up.

That correction feature can be annoying. A few times the corrective text typed in the wrong word and I don’t see it until after it was send.

Gaming and having teenagers at the right time are why I know many of the short forms. It's amazing how much has changed since I was a teenager in the late 80s!

Hi Deb! The world certainly has changed since the internet. When I was a teenager we still had the old crank telephone I used to contact my friends. Now messaging/ texting it right at your fingertips with the use of cell phones. I think every teenager has one.

Great freewrite Jo! I'm the same way with some of this new slang and or abbreviations. I ask my kids sometimes but more often I google what it means as I get tired of the "eye rolls" that I get from my kids! 🙄 😏

Thanks! 💕 It’s hard to keep up with the new slang Dee but we do pretty darn good. Google is great for finding out the meanings.
