CHACHARO

People who visit my house are always surprised that my pets are not exactly what we would call common, even for a South American country.

Perhaps the most striking one you will find is undoubtedly "Chácharo", a small wild pig, rescued from hunters and adopted in our small farm in Venezuela.

About two years ago, a couple of hunters caught Chácharo's mother to eat her, because she gave birth to three little wild piglets, two of them died, leaving "Chácharo" as the only survivor.

AN ENCOUNTER

As life happens, I had not visited my paternal family for years and that particular day I decided to do so, my sister's neighbor was discussing with her sons (the hunters) what they were going to do with the little animal, since in his wild mischief he had gone into the neighbor's yard and I found they had given him a blow that broke one of his fangs.

When I heard the debate, I went over to say hello and was amazed with the animal, I asked for it and after hearing its story, the lady asked me if I was not interested in buying it, without thinking I gave her $20, making me the new adoptive father of the creature.

WHAT IS A CHACHARO?

In short, it is a kind of small wild boar; a wild pig that lives from pole to pole in America, it is known as Baquiro in my country but it has many other names such as: Pecarí de Collar, Cerdo de Monte, Jabalí de collar, Taitetú, Coyámel, Saíno, Jabalina, Sajino, Chancho Rosillo, Zahino and of course Chácharo.

In size, it can be said that it is small, measuring approximately 90 cm, with a tail of 5 cm, reaching a height of 44 to 57 cm; it weighs between 20 and 30 kg. However, it has an imposing attitude, I doubt it will be so if you approach it and you don't tend to get nervous.

Its coat is long and thick, black or gray with a white spot in the form of a collar. Young individuals of this species are reddish brown during the first months of life and have a narrow black stripe along the back; as they grow older they change their color.

It can be said that they are omnivorous, but as a good pig, they enjoy rooting and searching under the surface of the earth for roots, animals, etc.

A BELOVED MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

Chacharo is undoubtedly a character in my family, trying to get into the rooms, chasing the chickens, pretending to be a dog, among so many other things he does.

You can be sure that he will not be turned into lunch meat, nor into a decorative skin, although he is currently in our house in the city, we are managing a permit to reproduce him in captivity in our farm.

We want to contribute to keep this species because it is undoubtedly the most tender pet we have ever had.

La gente que visita mi casa, se sorprende siempre que mis más otras no son precisamente lo que llamaríamos comunes, aún para un país sudamericano.

Quizás el más llamativo que hallarán sin duda alguna es "Chácharo", un pequeño cerdo de monte, rescatado de unos cazadores y adoptado en nuestra pequeña granja en Venezuela.

Hace cerca de dos años atrás, un par de cazadores se atraparon a la madre de Chácharo para comérsela, pues resulta que está dió a luz a tres pequeños cerditos salvajes, dos de ellos fallecieron quedando como único sobreviviente "Chácharo".

UN ENCUENTRO

Como cosas de la vida, tenía años sin visitar a mi familia paterna y ese día en particular que decidí hacerlo, la vecina de mi hermana estaba discutiendo con sus hijos (los cazadores) que iban a hacer con el animalito, ya que en su silvestre travesura había pasado al patio del vecino y hallé habían dado un golpe que le rompió uno de sus colmillos.

Al oír el debate, me acerqué a saludar y quedé maravillado con el animalito, pregunté por él y tras oír su historia, la señora me pregunta si no estoy interesado en comprarlo, sin pensarlo le di 20$ dólares haciéndome el nuevo padre adoptivo de la criatura.

¿QUE ES UN CHACHARO?

En resumidas cuentas, es una especie de jabalí menor; un cerdito salvaje que habita de polo a polo en la América, se le conoce como Baquiro en mi país pero tiene muchos otros nombres como: Pecarí de Collar, Cerdo de Monte, Jabalí de collar, Taitetú, Coyámel,​ Saíno, Jabalina, Sajino, Chancho Rosillo, Zahino y por supuesto Chácharo.

De tamaño, se puede decir que es pequeño, mide aproximadamente 90 cm, con una cola de 5 cm alcanzando una altura de unos 44 a 57 cm; tiene un peso entre 20 y 30 Kg. Sin embargo, tiene una actitud imponente, dudo que así sea jugando se le acerque y usted no tienda a ponerse nervioso.

Su pelaje es largo y espeso, de color negro o gris con una mancha blanca en forma de collar. Los individuos jóvenes de esta especie son de color café rojizo durante los primeros meses de vida y poseen una raya negra angosta a lo largo del lomo; conforme envejecen cambian su tonalidad.

Puede decirse que son omnívoros, pero como buen cerdo disfruta mucho hozando y buscando debajo de la superficie de la tierra raíces, animalitos, etc.

UN MIEMBRO QUERIDO DE LA FAMILIA

Chacharo sin duda es todo un personaje en mi familia, tratando de meterse a los cuartos, persiguiendo las gallinas, haciéndose pasar por perro, entre tantas otras ocurrencias que que tiene.

Pueden estar seguros que no será convertido en carne de almuerzo, ni tampoco en una piel decorativa, si bien actualmente está en nuestra casa en la ciudad, estamos gestionando un permiso para reproducirlo en cautiverio en nuestra granja.

Queremos contribuir a mantener esta especie porque es sin duda la más tierna mascota que en la vida hemos podido tener.
