First it is important for us to understand what an implant is all about.

What is an implant?
An implant is an artificial body part, such as a heart, breast or a limb called prosthesis which can used to change the contour of a person body part.

Now a breast implant is an artificial breast called prosthesis which is used to change the size, the shape and the contour of a person's breast, through reconstructibe plastic surgery.

Types Of Breast Implants:

There are many different types of breast implants which are available and it may interest you to know each of them and their characteristics.

  1. Gummy bear brest implants: these type of implants are sometimes referred to as form-stable implants and the reason behind this is because they don't change in their shape, even when the implant shell has been broken.
When shaped they have more projection but if it rotates after the surgery it will lead to an unusual appearance and will need another medical procedure to correct.
It contains a silicone gel on it's inside which is more thicker and consistent than the traditional silicone gel implants. And it's important to note that this type of implant needs a longer incision in the skin.

  2. Saline Breast Implants: this kind of breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. It provides a uniform shape, feeling and firmness and only women of 18 years and older approved for this procedures. If the saline implant shell should leak, it will collapse and the saline content will be naturally absorbed by the body and expelled.

  3. The Round Breast Implants: this set of implants makes the breast appear fuller because they have the same shape all over, due to its roundness but care is taken because it easily rotates out of place.

  4. Silicone breast implants: this type of implants is filled with silicone gel which has the feeling of a natural breast. Before the procedure of silicone breast implants, a plastic surgeon needs to check the implants to make sure they are functioning properly. Because a leaking silicone breast implant which is filled with silicone gel will not collapse but remain with the implant shell.

  5. Smooth Breast Implant: gives the softest feeling of all, they give more natural movement because they move with the breast implant pocket but this kind of implant may have some visible ripling under the skin.

  6. Structured saline Breast implants: these set of implants are the type which are filled with sterile salt water. They feel more nature because of the design of their inner structure.

  7. Textured breast implants: this type of implants develop tissue like scar to stick to the implant which makes them stay firmly inside of the breast.

  2. Asymmetry: This is when the breast are not of the same size in appearance, shape and or brest level.

  3. Deflation: when their is leakage of the salt water solution (saline) used in saline filled breat implant. It is mostly caused as a result of rupture, collapse of the implant or due to valve leak or tear.

  4. Delayed wond healing:it is when the incision site takes longer to heal or when it refuses to heal normally.

  5. Latrogenic injury or damage: this is injury or damage to implant or damage to tissue as a result of implant surgery.

  6. Inflammation or irritation: is mostly visible by redness, swelling, warmth, pain or loss of function as the body's response to injury or an infection.
