Movie Review [Esp/Eng]. Wings (1927)

Un saludo a todos los de la comunidad cinéfila, por aquí @rasecdus y para mí es grato dar mi primera reseña en esta comunidad.

Este año 2024 me propuse una labor titánica: empezar a ver todas las películas nominadas y/o ganadoras a algo en los premios Oscar y los Globos de Oro, porque quiero nutrir el hábito del cine en mí, y creo que no hay mejor forma de empezar que con la primer película ganadora del Oscar a Mejor Película y Mejores Efectos de Ingeniería.

This year 2024 I set myself a titanic task: to start watching all the films nominated and/or winning something at the Oscar and Golden Globe Awards, because I want to nurture the habit of cinema in me, and I think there is no better way to start than with the first Oscar winning film for Best Picture and Best Engineering Effects.

Wings (Alas, en español) es una película de drama bélico que retrata la historia ficticia de Jack Powell y David Armstrong, dos jóvenes americanos reclutados para la Primera Guerra Mundial para ser aces de la aviación, y también de cerca, se cruza la historia de Mary Preston, amiga de la infancia de Jack, la cuál tiene un interés romántico en él. Cuenta con las actuaciones estelares de Clara Bow (una superestrella de la época), Buddy Rogers y Richard Arlen, además de que fue dirigida por William Wellman

Wings is a war drama film that portrays the fictional story of Jack Powell and David Armstrong, two young Americans recruited for World War I to be aviation aces, and also closely intertwines the story of Mary Preston, Jack's childhood friend, who has a romantic interest in him. It features stellar performances by Clara Bow (a superstar of the era), Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen, and was directed by William Wellman.

A partir de este punto vienen SPOILERS, así que recomiendo que si no la han visto, háganlo, no tiene pérdida.

Ok, para empezar, es una historia bastante cliché del héroe americano, pero para mí gusto, fue muy agradable, posee buen ritmo (a excepción de una secuencia un tanto ridícula dónde Jack se emborracha, pero que igual es relevante para la historia) y tiene personajes con los que uno puede fácilmente identificarse.

Ok, for starters, it's a pretty cliché American hero story, but for my taste, it was very enjoyable, it has good pacing (except for a somewhat ridiculous sequence where Jack gets drunk, but it's still relevant to the story) and it has characters that you can easily identify with.

Jack y David son el típico duo de antagonistas por un amor, debido a que David posee un amor con Sylvia, pero Jack está cegado y jura y perjura que Sylvia lo ama a él, pero más adelante ellos se vuelven grandes camaradas de la aviación, tanto así, que la escena cumbre es cuando Jack accidentalmente derriba a David, porque él había robado un avión alemán. Sinceramente la escena de la muerte de David es muy conmovedora.

Destaco además los personajes de Mary, con su personalidad chispeante y carácter firme, y un personaje menor, llamado Herman Schwimpf, el alivio cómico durante el primer cuarto de hora de la película, el cual honestamente me hubiera gustado tuviera mayor participación.

Jack and David are a typical love antagonist duo, because David has a love affair with Sylvia, but Jack is blinded and swears that Sylvia loves him, but later they become great aviation comrades, so much so, that the climax scene is when Jack accidentally shoots down David, because he had stolen a German plane. Honestly, the scene of David's death is very touching.

I also highlight the characters of Mary, with her sparkling personality and strong character, and a minor character named Herman Schwimpf, the comic relief during the first quarter of an hour of the film, which honestly I would have liked to have had more participation.

Para ser una película de hace casi 100 años, me parece que se mantiene muy bien en el tiempo, a pesar de que claro, tiene cosas de la época que en tiempos modernos pudieran verse extraño, pero no hay que olvidar nunca el contexto de los años 20.

Mi calificación? Un sólido 8/10. Me gustan las películas bélicas, y esta para mí fue refrescante porque son pocas las películas ubicadas en el contexto de la Gran Guerra, además posee personajes entrañables y siento que sentó las bases para lo que sería en el futuro el estereotipo de película bélica americana.

Con esta película inicio mi viaje, la próxima será The racket, otra de las nominadas mejor película. Sin más que decir, me despido y ¡que viva el cine!

To be a film from almost 100 years ago, it seems to me that it keeps very well in time, although of course, it has things of the time that in modern days could look strange, but we must never forget the context of the 20s.

My rating? A solid 8/10. I like war movies, and this one for me was refreshing because there are few movies set in the context of the Great War, it also has endearing characters and I feel it laid the groundwork for what would be in the future the stereotypical American war movie.

With this film I start my journey, the next one will be The racket, another Best Picture nominee. Without more to say, I say goodbye and long live cinema!
