NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES WITH THEIR WAYS

Disclaimer: This post isn't about talking bad about the Educational system in Nigeria but to make fun from it. I don't want to be sued thereafter 😁😁

I have attended and graduated from college of education in year 2015 and also furthering my degree in one of the Nigeria Universities and will be graduating soon by God's grace. I have experienced some weird system in school and most times, I feel like having a super power to favor myself and my friends but I don't see how possible it will be. It can never be possible sef because you just have to dance to their tune if you really want to study.

Let's dive into some of these weird things I have encountered so far......

THE ISSUE OF ACCEPTANCE FEE

I want to believe it is only in Nigeria that this fee is being collected. Like, I wonder why would they still ask us to pay for Acceptance fee when they were the one who brought out the admission process and are looking for students to take in. We then would be given admission and instead of collecting only school fees, they will want us to pay for Acceptance fee. Is it money for accepting us or what is it? I think this has to be curbed. Who is with me? 🙄 I know it is part of their "Ajemonu" (I think this is part of what they want to share among themselves)😅😅

ISSUE OF TEXTBOOKS

This one, they are cheating us and I just wish to have super power to fight them and won't implicate me. The fee would have been included in our school fees but we still get to buy course materials with our own money. I thought since we have paid for school textbook, all courses we are doing should be included in it instead of buying course materials with money we supposed to use for our feeding. The worst part is our parents won't even give us this course materials money except we use part of our pocket money.

ISSUE OF PROJECT

When we were allocated to our various supervisors and I and my friends were waiting for our supervisor after the day's lecture. Then we started talking about project. Some supervisors can frustrate the lives of their students all because they are opportuned to guide us through. I was like "Isn't project supposed to be part of our curriculum and since lecturers are being paid their salary, they are the ones to even hasten us to be fast instead of delaying us and even giving us tough time". There are some lecturers that would delay students in school just because of project even after graduating. This is bad though.

USE OF WIFI

I would want us to know that our schools are really cheating us and extorting money from us. How can I pay for Wifi and I still don't have access to it even in school. They have collected money from me and I still pay for subscription. 😬

CERTIFICATE COLLECTION

My friend was telling me that once you graduate and you didn't come to collect your clearance after a year of graduating, they will start topping it up with $2 (#1000) per year. So that means if you wait for 4 years before coming to clear your certificate, that means you will be paying 4k ($8). The question is "What will the money be used for?" It will be shared among themselves.

For God's sake, aren't we free to come collect our certificate anytime we want? At least it's our own right and they should attend to us freely whenever we come and not asking us to pay for the years we didn't come for it. It's bad na 😔

AWARDING GRADES

This one is the worst of all of them. Like, how will it be for you to stay up late at night to read and someone who didn't study at all get a good grade than you? There are many lecturers who favors some students than the other. I believe we should be treated equally and according to how we perform and not helping the unserious ones in detriment to the real students who took their time and efforts to read hard for a course. Nigeria schools will not cease to amaze me because the system is controlled to favor some people over the others.

An adage goes thus:
He who knows the way, get it. Yoruba will say "Eni to mo way lo mo way".

We have some lecturers that they only want money. Once you can bribe them, you are free. And these kinds of students, it's so pity that they won't be able to defend themselves outside school because they didn't have time to study but to buy their way through all courses.

Thanks for reading

Haha, welcome to Nigeria, if this was done in a private sector, it would probably be Cracked down by now 😄

The last thing I would care about is the Nigerian school system, even the political system is the same, it's a world of greed, people do things only in their favor.

Yes, it isn't only in schools but everywhere. Greediness at the peak and it's ruining all in the country.

From my own perspective, you have said it all with this your information and a wounderful writeup. Nigerian University system is so so corrupt and can easily be manipulated by those in higher authorities.

We only want a good government and all these will be curbed. The system is ruled by political elites who want to jeopardize and take the advantage of greediness.

You have spoken well. Any university that collects 4k from you for your certificate, then thank God. To collect certificate from the school I graduated from was 15k a few years ago. Only God knows how much it will be now.

All I can say is that you do your best and stay focused. Soon you will be through and all these that makes schooling frustrating will be things of the past for you.

Meanwhile, that acceptance fee part made me laugh. For sure, they invited you to come and learn in their university, they needed students, you came, why pay them for accepting you? Haha. They should pay you for agreeing to come, for agreeing to be accepted 😂 😂 😂 😂

Looks like they're extracting money from you however they want. This is unfortunate. In Bangladesh the tuition fee is high and there's corruption.

Although nepotism done by the teachers is a global thing, not exclusive to nigeria. And I understand that, if I were a teacher, even I would have favorite students.

Very interesting take on Nigerian Universities. Now, you may or may not like what I have to say about it lols... some of what you have said sounds quite normal to me, albeit that it is stressful to students who were not made aware of the additional financial expenses lying in wait for them. Other things you have shone a light on seem downright outrageous. Either way, I truly empathise with students at Nigerian universities, although I am somewhat jealous of the lovely modern architecture of your campus :-) so let's hit your bullet points: Acceptance fees, not specific to Nigeria. I see they have them in South Africa too. Potentially at a lot of Universities although I am not familiar with the fee constructs.
Materials - when I graduated from University some 27 years ago, I remember we had to pay extra for course materials too. But then we also had to pay for textbooks separate from tuition fees. For me, it's all about transparency. If you know what to expect, then you can manage those expectations but if it comes at you out of the left field, the expenses can be a bitter pill to swallow. Projects - I know some professional courses here in the UK have a project element to them that is completed after the main exams. If it is done concurrently in Nigerioa then that seems unfair if they withhold and delay your graduation because they haven't marked your project. Maybe another scheme as you suggest to weazle more money out of you in bribes! Sad if true. Wifi - that's contractual. Stop paying and demand a refund if they are breaking the contract. Very frustrating not to have wifi on campus though. Have you asked what the issue might be? Certificate collection - ok this one respectfully I have to disagree with you altogether :-) After all those years of study and hard-earned money spent on tuition, one would fail to want to collect their certificate proving graduation with their degree? Everything has a cost and the University has to store that hard copy of the certificate safely for you as generally, they are not able to reproduce them, so think of it as cheap storage. A bank safety deposit box would cost a ton more. Finally awarding grades. This is beyond me. I thought all University exams were grades based on anonymity using student numbers only not names. This is crazy that subjectivity is allowed to come into the equation, and the fact that lecturers can be bought is soul-destroying. I really feel for you. Thanks for an interesting read. I do enjoy learning about what goes on in other societies.
