Una relación que comienza por razones presurosas puede acabar mal, o tal vez no. Esta película trata un tema romántico, a la vez que nos muestra un escenario en China siendo atacada por una enfermedad catastrófica, el cólera. Esta cinta fue estrenada el 2006 siendo dirigida por John Curran, basada en una novela del mismo nombre. La pareja protagonista está interpretada por Edwart Norton y Naomi Watts.

A relationship that starts for hasty reasons can end badly, or maybe not. This film deals with a romantic theme, while showing us a scenario in China being attacked by a catastrophic disease, cholera. This film was released in 2006 being directed by John Curran, based on a novel of the same name. The leading couple is played by Edward Norton and Naomi Watts.

La historia comienza en Londres en 1920. Nos muestra a una jovencita llamada Kitty, que debido a presiones familiares, ve como una oportunidad el casarse con Walter Fane. Lo que lleva consigo este compromiso, es el mudarse a Shanghái, China, debido a la profesión de Walter, un bacteriólogo estatal. Lamentablemente sus estilos y ritmos de vida no llegan a encajar, apareciendo diversos problemas en la relación. En ello, la profesión de Walter, los llevará a vivir en un pueblo azotado por el cólera.

The story begins in London in 1920. It shows us a young girl named Kitty, who due to family pressures, sees an opportunity to marry Walter Fane. What comes with this engagement is a move to Shanghai, China, due to Walter's profession, a state bacteriologist. Unfortunately, their lifestyles and rhythms of life do not match, causing several problems in the relationship. In this, Walter's profession will lead them to live in a town stricken by cholera.

No quiero desvelar mucho de la trama, pero digamos que hay 2 líneas principales. La primera enfocada, en mostrar la relación entre los protagonistas, que debido a pasados distintos ven difícil congeniar. Y la segunda, enfocada en mostrar el transcurrir de la terrible enfermedad en un pequeño pueblo chino. He de decir que deja reflexiones en ambas líneas.

I don't want to reveal too much of the plot, but let's say that there are 2 main lines. The first is focused on showing the relationship between the protagonists, who, due to their different pasts, find it difficult to get along. And the second, focused on showing the course of the terrible disease in a small Chinese village. I must say that it leaves reflections in both lines.

El punto más resaltante de la película, es el escenario ya que se muestran los paisajes y vivires de una China rural antigua. Uno se sorprende con la belleza de la naturaleza y con el despliegue de construcciones y habitantes. Las actuaciones no se quedan atrás, en mi caso considero que Naomi Watts es la que lleva la carga emocional, y la que trata de mostrar su sentir en diversas partes de la película. Entre los secundarios resalta Tobby Jones como Waddington, el asesor local del pequeño pueblo.

The most outstanding point of the film is the scenery, as it shows the landscapes and life of an ancient rural China. One is amazed by the beauty of nature and the array of buildings and inhabitants. The performances are not far behind, in my case I consider that Naomi Watts is the one who carries the emotional load, and who tries to show her feelings in various parts of the film. Among the supporting cast, Tobby Jones stands out as Waddington, the local assessor of the small town.

Entre los puntos malos está que la historia se centra demasiado en la pareja principal, y no se llega a conocer mucho de los habitantes locales. Y para acabar, el final no me llega a convencer mucho.

Among the bad points is that the story focuses too much on the main couple, and we don't get to know much about the local inhabitants. And finally, the ending doesn't convince me much.

Lo recomiendo si quieres ver una trama de romance, con contenido histórico.
