The people who did really well in the California gold rush weren’t the ones extracting the gold. They were the ones who provided the infrastructure and tools.
HP is a source of infrastructure and tools.

This is a great point that I was actually thinking about when writing the piece.
It was much more profitable to sell food than actually collect gold.
Also gold just had less value in that area.
It needed to be shipped east where there was less supply.
