Words Of Wisdom

When it comes to parenting, I don't think there's a manual somewhere on how to do it right, some of you just learn on the job and everyday you find new ways to handle things when it comes to your kids. While some people literally have to take every decisions themselves without having any past experience, some of us are lucky to have parents who have, in one way or the other shown us how we should handle things like this, and not just things about our kids, but also life in general.

When we were still young and all of us still lived in the same house (everyone is out there hustling or schooling now), my dad would occasionally call everyone of us into the living room to talk to us. I remember I and my siblings used to hate these meetings because this were the moments my mom and dad would table everything we've done wrong and someone would probably get an ass whooping.

But luckily for us, during these meetings, it was usually more talking and less ass whooping. My dad would tell us stories about his family and his dad and he would tell us how his dad used to gather him and his siblings in the living like this and tell them stories about things that happened at his workplace, using those things to teach them real life lessons.

So my dad adapted that style and used it on us. At first we (especially me) didn't understand the purpose of those meetings and I didn't really pay much attention to them (or so I thought) until I left home and faced the real world, that was when I started to see most of the things my dad was advising us about with my own eyes.

Fortunately, it turned out I was listening after all, because I started using some of his words of wisdom to tackle real life problems and it always worked for me. If I didn't know the good foundation my dad was setting for myself and my siblings back then, now I know because there have been cases where I'm talking to my friends and then I start telling them stories of the things my dad had said to us back then in the living room.

And whenever I start a conversation with "My dad will always say.." there's this happiness that comes within me and makes me really proud of my dad and grateful that he did all what he did back then, even though we all thought he was disturbing us.

So parents, always make out time to have family meetings like this, to talk to your kids and give them words of wisdom, advise, so that when the day comes that they have to go into places you can't go with them, let your words of wisdom go with them and guide them. They might not realize the importance of what you're doing now, but they will some day just like I do now.

Honestly, my mother was the one who did most of the talking and advising and I can see everything single thing she talked about. It pays to listen abeg. 🤭

Your dad did a great job with you guys. Mine doesn’t talk to us much about things, he just makes you see instead. So instead of talking, he just does. You know what I mean?

Like seriously your dad really tried because if he haven't been telling you all that and advice you about life when you find yourself outside you will live life anyhow.

But his word makes you know what is right and wrong even though you thought he was disturbing when he was saying it.

Am glad you were able to make use of what he has been telling you that shows that you are actually listening to him.

Exactly.. It's almost as if he gave us a head start to put us ahead of our peers because these days, I see myself advising my friends but not based on my experience, but of that of my dad.
