Memories Of My Travels

Good morning to all. Life is a journey, right?

And I like to think of my life as a long trip full of adventure. Some days are rainy and some are sunny, but they're all worth experiencing. Although life is full of ups and downs with some unexpected twists and turns, ultimately it is about creating wonderful and beautiful memories that we can cherish for the rest of our lives.

I had always enjoyed traveling and had traveled widely to different parts of the world. I do not need a big house or a big car but I hope that I can continue to travel extensively. Now that I am stuck at home and not able to travel, for the time being, I cherish all those wonderful and exciting memories of my travels.

I have a number of travel nick-nacks that I have collected from all parts of the world over the past 30 odd years and today I like to share some of these with you all.

This poster of Blue Mountains, in the outskirts of Sydney, hangs prominently on top of my dressing table in my bedroom. This is one of the first things that I see every day when I wake up each morning. In fact, I had been to Blue Mountains twice and I loved the scenery there. One fun fact, it has the steepest railway in the world.

I received this cloth painting as a free gift when I purchased train tickets to go to Hakone from Tokyo. My favorite memory of this trip was that we took 3 different modes of transportation namely train, ship and bus. Unfortunately, we could not take the cable car as the fumes from the hot spring were too strong. I can still imagine the sunset at the lake while I was traveling in the ship.

The beautiful beadwork is my souvenir from Mulu National Park, Sarawak which has been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Area. Although it is located deep in the rainforest, there is a Marriott. Mulu's claim to fame is that one of its caves, the Sarawak Chambers is the world's largest chamber. On top of the beadwork is a souvenir from Venice, showing its romantic and scenic canal.

This is a painting of the floating market in Bangkok. Observe the painting closely and you can see that the uniqueness of this painting is that it is painted on a banana leaf.

My collection of Russian Dolls is displayed in my living room. Looking at these dolls reminds me of my most epic travel so far, the Trans Mongolian Railway Adventure. During this trip, I traveled from Bejing, Ulan Bator, Siberia, Moscow and all the way to St Petersberg over 25 days.

This porcelain plate shows 50 icons of Singapore which include the Merlion, Singapore Flyer, Gardens by the Bay and many others.

The Terracotta soldiers of Xian are the main reason why I wanted to visit this Chinese City. At the Terracotta Army Museum, I was able to see for myself thousands of life-sized clay soldiers with intricate details. These soldiers were guarding China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang.

These frames are hung in my dining room. In the middle is a poster of the movie, Rocky. I bought the movie poster in Saigon, and it's a constant reminder to me that an underdog can be successful. On the right is a long-stiched picture of wild geese flying. We bought this from the factory in Hanoi because it is made by people with disabilities. On the left is also a long-stiched picture but this time of the Great Wall Of China. This however is machine-made, not hand-made.

My whole house is filled with these precious memories of what I loved doing the most, visiting far and exotic places, trying out different food and getting to know people of different backgrounds. I do hope that I can travel soon. Now since I am retired, I will have more time to travel. I pray that my slipped disc will get better and the Covid situation will improve.
