Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea)

This beautiful heron is more active at night, however, this can be an advantage, as it is easier to find them perches resting on a tree branch.

In Costa Rica they can be found in lakes, rivers and the sea, but in general, they prefer mangrove environments. During the nights they can be observed feeding at the water's edge, mostly on crabs but it can also capture a great variety of mainly aquatic organisms, such as insects, amphibians, reptiles, fish and even small mammals.

They usually nest during the rainy season and build their nests with twigs and leaves which they place on a branch that extends above the water.

Esta hermosa garza es más activa durante la noche, sin embargo, esto puede ser una ventaja, pues es más sencillo encontrarlas percharas en descansando en la rama de un árbol.

En Costa Rica se les puede encontrar en lagos, ríos y el mar, pero en general, prefieren los ambientes de manglar. Durante las noches se les puede observar alimentándose a la orilla del agua, en su mayoría de cangrejos pero también puede capturar una gran variedad de organismos principalmente acuáticos, tales como insectos, anfibios, reptiles, peces e, incluso, pequeños mamíferos.

Suelen anidar durante la época lluviosa y construyen sus nidos con ramitas y hojas los cuales colocan sobre una rama que se extiende encima del agua.
