Tuesday. 585 days have passed since the declaration of the quarantine in Venezuela due to the Covid19 pandemic, a relaxation of the quarantine has been announced for the Christmas season ... although personally I think it is a bad idea to do it without adherence to measures of security and the strengthening of the medical-health-care system, but in short, it is what is going to be done, regardless of the negative consequences that may be generated.
Lately the blog has focused on issues of the arts of the past, I do not know if I will maintain this trend in the future, but for today I am going to follow it. Today, in 1745, Jonathan Swift, Irish writer, author of the well-known novel Gulliver's Travels (1726) dies. Actually the original title was longer: "ravels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships", but it was quite summarized, after all, it was a long novel in four parts, which narrate four different voyages, of which the first two are the I remember that they have greater fame and greater amount of adaptations to other arts, I mean the trip to Liliput (the land of people who were a few inches tall) and the trip to Brobdingnag (land of giants over 20 meters tall), although the other two trips do not lose charm, there are even a couple of details to mention that caught my attention, one is that Laputa Floating Island appears in the third book (every lover of classic Japanese animation will recognize the reference LOL) and in the fourth trip, it turns out that the wild and evil humans were called Yahoo... yes, exactly that word that gained so much fame for the company that was in the Boom of the civil and private Internet in the 90s of the 20th century.
Gulliver's travels have something peculiar, they are a parody of the fashionable books of his time, I mean those that were travel memoirs and related incredible adventures, sometimes of doubtful verisimilitude, in short, that make me think that he continued the ideal of the old "Don Quixote", while the classic of Spanish literature made a fine mockery of chivalric books, while this fictitious travel book made a delicious parody of the travel diaries with which the wealthy classes they killed his boredom. However, I must make a difference that catches my attention, the main character, Lemuel Gulliver, goes throughout the narrative developing a change in his personality, from surprise and even a somewhat naive sense about the world and cultures , until reaching a point of misogyny that leads him to end his life apart from people, isolating himself from his own family and spending more time talking with the horses in his stable than sharing with his daughters and sons ... a sad ending, well, at least he doesn't die of illness like Don Quixote, who regains his sanity just before he dies and ends up repudiating all the extraordinary follies he did in his adventurous life.
In personal matters, which today is the least I comment on in these blogs, I have to say that I am good in what is possible, I work in what I get, what in Venezuela we call Tigre (temporary job opportunity and time limited, considered a non-regular and quite unpredictable extra income), gathering to complete and buy a cell phone, because I definitely have no way for my old cell phone to work, well, it served me well for years, it's time to let it go. Han pasado 585 días desde la declaración de la cuarentena en Venezuela por la pandemia de Covid19, se ha anunciado una flexibilizan de la cuarentena por la temporada navideña... aunque en lo personal creo que es una mala idea hacerlo sin el apego a medidas de seguridad y el reforzamiento del sistema médico-sanitario-asistencial, pero en fin, es lo que se va a hacer, sin importar las consecuencias negativas que se puedan generar.
Últimamente la bitácora la e enfocado en cuestiones de las artes de tiempo pasado, no sé si mantendré esta tendencia en el futuro, pero por hoy coy a seguirla. En realidad el título original era mas largo: "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships" (Viajes a varias naciones remotas del mundo, en cuatro partes. Por Lemuel Gulliver, primero cirujano, y luego capitán de varias naves.), pero se resumió bastante, a fin de cuentas, era una larga novela en cuatro partes, que narran cuatro distintos viajes, de entre ellos los dos primeros son los que recuerdo que tienen mayor fama y mayor cantidad de adaptaciones a otros artes, me refiero al viaje a Liliput (la tierra de gente que medía unas pocas pulgadas de estatura) y el viaje a Brobdingnag (tierra de gigantes de mas de 20 metros de estatura), aunque los otros dos viajes no pierden encanto, incluso hay un par de detalles a mencionar que me llamaron la atención, uno es que en el tercer libro aparece la Isla Flotante Laputa (todo amante de la animación japonesa clásica va a reconocer la referencia jajaja) y en el cuarto viaje, resulta que a los humanos salvajes y malignos los llamaban Yahoo.. si, exactamente esa palabra que ganó tanta fama por la empresa que estuvo en el Boom de la Internet civil y privada en la década de los 90 del Siglo XX.
Los viajes de Gulliver tienen algo de peculiar, son una parodia de los libros de moda en su época, me refiero a los que eran memorias de viajes y relataban increíbles aventuras, algunas veces de dudosa verosimilitud, en fin, que me hacen pensar que siguió el ideal del viejo "El Quijote", en tanto que el clásico de la literatura española hacía burla muy fina de los libros de caballería, mientras que este libro de viajes ficticios hacia una deliciosa parodia de los diarios de viaje con los que las clases pudientes mataban su aburrimiento. Sin embargo, debo marcar una diferencia que me llama la atención, el personaje principal, Lemuel Gulliver, va a lo largo de la narrativa desarrollando un cambio en su personalidad, desde la sorpresa y hasta el sentido un tanto ingenuo sobre el mundo y las culturas, hasta llegar a un punto de misoginia que le lleva a terminar su vida apartado de la gente, aislándose de su propia familia y pasando mas tiempo conversando con los caballos en su establo que compartiendo con sus hijas e hijos... un triste final, bueno, cuando menos no muere de enfermedad como el Quijote, que recupera su cordura justo antes de morir y termina repudiando todas las extraordinarias locuras que hizo en su vida aventurera.
En cosas personales, que ya hoy en día es lo que menos comento en estas bitácoras, tengo que decir que estoy bien en lo que es posible, trabajo en lo que me sale, lo que en Venezuela llamamos Tigre (oportunidad laboral temporal y de tiempo limitado, considerado un ingreso extra no regular y bastante impredecible), reuniendo para completar y comprarme un celular, porque ya definitivamente no tengo manera de que mi viejo celular trabaje, en fin, me sirvió bien por años, es hora de dejarlo partir. Espero que estés bien y nos podamos leer en otra oportunidad.
