ECOTRAIN: QOTW S9.2: Is There Really A God?

He who denies the existence of God has some reason for wishing that God did not exist.

Every day we hear the news on our TV stations, online, by word of mouth. This news is mostly horrific and a lot of times cause so much panic, unsettling feelings, and take away our peace of mind. If it is not known gunmen shoot innocent kids in school, it is unknown gunmen abducting and killing people from their communities. There is famine in so many lands, people are suffering and struggling to eat on a weekly basis, families are losing jobs or even their breadwinners, and some are barely surviving. People are dying of strange illnesses sometimes with no clear root cause and no solution in view. Natural disasters and pandemics plague the world and people are left in tears.

But the same question that remains on the lips of so many is WHY?

  • Why are all these bad things happening if there is a God especially one that people claim is loving, good, and powerful?
  • Why do bad things happen to the best of people?
  • Is this God selective of who He helps and when He does?
  • Would He just watch as people destroy each other and the world turns upside down?
  • If He is powerful, can He not put a stop to the suffering?

I will be responding to this question from a Christian and logical perspective.

In John 16:33 (NLT), Jesus said “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world”.

From this passage, Jesus did not say suffering might happen, He said it is, in fact, going to happen! Now, I am not in God’s mind and I don’t understand everything but I do understand some things that I can share with you.

1. God is not the originator of suffering and bad things
When we look at the creation story in the book of Genesis, we would see that God created a beautiful earth and everything was good. He created both non-living and living things. He went further to create man (human) in His own image and likeness. There is no denying that God’s love for us was clear. With his love, He gave us free will to choose.

As parents, we bring forth children into the world, knowing fully well, it is not going to be always laughs and fun but there may be setbacks, tears, and disappointment. Yet, we still give birth to them regardless because we know there is great hope and potential for love and happiness in the midst of life’s trials.

Same as God, He brought us into this world knowing that, we could either choose to do right or wrong by him but he still brought us anyway. Bear in mind, that God is not the author of evil.

2. God uses suffering and bad things to achieve good things
There are times that things start out bad and tough but from those situations, a good thing or things come out from them. That right there is God at work in your life.

This even gets more beautiful when we are committed to following His ways and precepts as guidelines for our lives. Eventually, that situation that seemed like there was no hope becomes a success story for people to hold unto hope in their own situation.

It can only be God who takes the worse of situations and turns them into the best of stories ever recorded.

3. Suffering has an expiration
Suffering does not last forever, it indeed has an expiration date. If we can be honest, regardless of how bad things get, we have experienced good times where everything seemed to be going well and smoothly.

I have come to understand that for everything on this earth, there is a time and season and so does suffering. Suffering may last for a night but joy comes in the morning. I believe, the reason God has delayed ending suffering – he is indeed powerful to do so, is because God loves all of us. God loves the sinners and the righteous equally. He wants all men to turn willingly to Him.

Just like a parent with good kids and bad kids. You want the best for both of them and you give a long rope and chance for the bad child to find his way back to someday becoming good.

I will like to say that indeed there is a God. I have personally experienced His awesomeness, greatness, and power at work in my life.

My prayer for everyone in doubt is that they get to have an encounter with God and experience Him on a personal level because a personal experience is the highest form of evangelism.

In closing, I will end with a powerful quote that goes...

When pain and suffering come upon us, we finally see not only that we are not in control of our lives but that we never were.
-Timothy Keller

Thank you for your precious time and do have an amazing day!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your writing. As a believer, I agree with your points. We think of God from our perspective but God is something more than what we think/understand.

First of all, it's an honour to have you here.
I am super grateful 😊.

God is something more than what we think/understand.

This is so true. I have come to understand that God's ways are unfathomable. The more I try to figure His ways out, the more He keeps blowing my mind. I have resolved to trust in Him because He is never wrong!

Thank you so much for stopping by once again @rem-steem!

Hi @peaq. Interesting your point of view on the quiz question. It's true, what comforts us is that soon the world suffering will end. God has promised and his word always succeeds. Thank you for sharing your feelings on the subject. Success in the contest!😊👍🌺

It's the first quote you used that touched me. Most people do claim there is no God because of the situations the are facing on a daily basis. They doubt the existence of God because they wonder why bad things happen to them even while he is up there.

I liked how to brush all our doubts away, by telling us about the unfailing love of God. He always has the best plans for us and he will always turn all our sorrows into Joy. All we have to do is trust and have faith in him.

Yes my dear.
Our consolation and hope are that God's plans for us are plans of good and not of evil to indeed bring us to an expected end.

A lovely writing on this topic. Thanks for including the logical aspect as well. It isnt always logical tho, this God, but like you said he knows how to make things beautiful in due time.

I loved reading your response my dear @peaq, really these sufferings that we find in life, is to seek more from God, since he did not say. that we would not have burdens, but with him in our hearts, they would feel more relieved. God bless you for your great message of God's love. 🙏🏼🤗💞
