The second mile

Good evening everyone, today I want to talk to you about a principle and it is called, as the title says, The Second Mile, and to begin let's go to the book of Mt 5:38-42

“You have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I tell you: do not resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also to him; 40 and whoever wants to sue you and take your tunic, leave him your cloak also; 41 and whoever forces you to carry a load for one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you; and whoever wishes to borrow from you, do not refuse him.”

Pay special attention to the V41 and anyone who forces you to carry cargo for one mile, go two. Let's look at the background of this first:
The Romans occupied the land of Palestine for almost 100 years, but they learned something from the Persians, who had dominated the world at the time. The Persians had learned a secret, not only to conquer, but to use the conquered people to their advantage, to do menial jobs.
For example: If a Persian soldier was walking through conquered land, and he got tired of carrying whatever he was carrying, he could say to any conquered person, "Listen, by law you must carry these things for me," and that person had to do it.
This the Romans learned from the Persians. And of course, for the Romans, this seemed like a magnificent law. Thus, any Roman soldier or any Roman citizen could say to any Jew: "by law, you are obliged to carry my load for a mile." This was humiliating for any Jew, this was something that any Jew hated with all the intensity of his soul, to be forced to carry the burden of a Roman. It is said that the Jews had well marked the miles on the road, and did not take another step when they had traveled a mile, carrying the load of a Roman soldier.
Of course, this law was considered unjust by the Jews and caused great resentment and rebellion. According to historians, the Roman soldiers, in particular, took great pleasure in humiliating the Jews in this way.
Now Jesus is preaching and says if a Roman soldier made you carry your load one mile, go two miles.

Can you imagine the surprise of the Jews upon hearing this teaching?
Question: What is the beginning of the second mile?
Listen, "You have to do more than the law requires." The Pharisees and the scribes who were in the crowd listening to Jesus were very careful to comply with the law, with the law of God, at least they thought so.
Mt 5:20 "For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."
The scribes and Pharisees were very careful to follow the law, that is, the letter of the law. And Jesus told them that if they did not go beyond how the scribes and Pharisees observed the law, they could not enter the kingdom of heaven. What the Pharisees had back then, and what is prevalent in our countries today, is what is called "minimum morality." A cold legalism.
So the second mile principle is: that we should do more than the law requires.
Someone said that we live life on 3 levels: the infernal level, which pays bad for good; the human level that pays good for good and bad for bad; and the heavenly level that pays good for evil.
And this is what the Lord Jesus Christ is talking about in Mt 5:44 “But I say to you: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you”
Sees it? Do more than the law requires. That is the beginning of the second mile.

Now one thing is to know the principle and another thing is to practice the second mile but we will leave that topic for another occasion.

La segunda milla

Buenas noches a todos, hoy quiero hablarles de un principio y se llama como dice el titulo , La segunda milla, y para ir comenzando vayamos a libro de Mt 5:38-42

“Oísteis que fue dicho: Ojo por ojo, y diente por diente. 39 Pero yo os digo: No resistáis al que es malo; antes, a cualquiera que te hiera en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra; 40 y al que quiera ponerte a pleito y quitarte la túnica, déjale también la capa; 41 y a cualquiera que te obligue a llevar carga por una milla, ve con él dos. 42 Al que te pida dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no se lo rehúses”.

Ponga especial atención en el V41 y a cualquiera que te obligue a llevar carga por una milla, ve con él dos. Veamos primero el trasfondo de esto:
Los romanos ocuparon la tierra de Palestina por casi 100 años, pero ellos aprendieron algo de los persas, que habían dominado el mundo de entonces. Los persas habían aprendido un secreto, no solo conquistar, sino utilizar a la gente conquistada de una manera ventajosa, para que realicen trabajos domésticos.
Por ejemplo: Si un soldado persa caminaba por tierra conquistada, y se cansaba de llevar cualquier cosa que estuviera llevando, podía decirle a cualquier persona conquistada: “Escucha, por ley debes cargar estas cosas por mí”, y esa persona tenía que hacerlo.
Esto aprendieron los romanos de los persas. Y claro, para los romanos, esto les pareció una ley magnifica. Así, cualquier soldado romano o cualquier ciudadano romano podía decirle a cualquier judío: “por ley, estás obligado a llevar mi carga por una milla”. Esto era humillante para cualquier judío, esto era algo que cualquier judío odiaba con toda la intensidad de su alma, ser obligado a llevar la carga de un romano. Se dice que los judíos tenían bien marcadas las millas en el camino, y no daban ni un paso más cuando habían recorrido una milla, llevando la carga de un soldado romano.
Por supuesto, esta ley era considerada injusta por los judíos y causaba gran resentimiento y rebelión. De acuerdo a los historiadores, los soldados romanos, de manera especial, gozaban enormemente humillando a los judíos de esta manera.
Ahora, Jesús está predicando y dice que, si un soldado romano los obligaba a llevar su carga por una milla, vayan dos millas.
¿Se puede imaginar la sorpresa de los judíos al escuchar esta enseñanza?
Pregunta: ¿Cuál es el principio de la segunda milla?
Escuche, “Ud tiene que hacer más, de lo que requiere la ley”. Los fariseos y los escribas que estaban entre la multitud escuchando a Jesús, eran muy cuidadosos en cumplir con la ley, con la ley de Dios, por lo menos ellos así lo pensaban.
Mt 5:20 “Porque os digo que si vuestra justicia no fuere mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, no entrareis en el reino de los cielos”
Los escribas y fariseos eran muy cuidadosos en cumplir con la ley, es decir, la letra de la ley. Y Jesús les dijo que si no iban más allá de cómo los escribas y fariseos observaban la ley, no podrían entrar en el reino de los cielos. Lo que los fariseos tenían en ese entonces y lo que es prevalente en nuestros países en la actualidad, es lo que se llama: “la moralidad mínima”. Un legalismo frio.
Entonces, el principio de la segunda milla es: que debemos hacer más de lo que la ley requiere.
Alguien dijo que vivimos la vida en 3 niveles: el nivel infernal, que paga mal por bien; el nivel humano que paga bien por bien y mal por mal; y el nivel celestial que paga bien por mal.
Y de esto está hablando el Señor Jesucristo en Mt 5:44 “Pero yo os digo: Amad a vuestros enemigos, bendecid a los que os maldicen, haced bien a los que os aborrecen, y orad por los que os ultrajan y os persiguen”
¿Lo ve? Hacer más de lo que la ley requiere. Ese es el principio de la segunda milla.

Ahora una cosa es conocer el principio y otra cosa es la practica de la segunda milla pero ese tema lo dejaremos para otra ocasion.
