Grandpa's books as witnesses to the war | Opa's Bücher als Zeugen des Krieges [EN/DE]

Today I´m going to tell you a totally different story. A story about my maternal grandpa. He was living in the attic appartment in my parents house until he died about 10 years ago. Even until now, my mother was not able to make so many changes in his appartment - emotionally. So for me it´s always a very welcome trip into the past when I visit my parents and we go upstairs. I love looking through his belonging. Now I found some very special books, books he apparently got during his time as a war prisoner in Texas - America. He never spoke to me about it, but we all know that he didn't have a bad time during his captivity, he even used his language skills to help out as a translator for the Americans. After this time he brought some books to Germany that witness his time in America and I'm so excited to see these real signs of real history.
Heute erzähle ich euch mal eine ganz andere Geschichte. Eine Geschichte über meinen Opa mütterlicherseits. Er lebte bis zu seinem Tod vor ca. 10 Jahren in der Dachgeschosswohnung meines Elternhauses. Auch bis jetzt konnte meine Mutter nicht so viel in seiner Wohnung verändern – aus emotionalen Gründen. Daher ist es für mich immer eine sehr willkommene Reise in die Vergangenheit, wenn ich meine Eltern besuche und wir nach oben gehen. Ich liebe es, seine Sachen durchzusehen. Jetzt habe ich einige ganz besondere Bücher gefunden, Bücher, die er anscheinend während seiner Zeit als Kriegsgefangener in Texas - Amerika bekommen hat. Er hat nie mit mir über darüber gesprochen, aber wir alle wissen, dass er während seiner Gefangenschaft keine schlechte Zeit hatte, er konnte mit seinen Sprachkenntnissen sogar als Übersetzer für die Amerikaner aushelfen. Nach dieser Zeit brachte er einige Bücher mit nach Deutschland, die seine Zeit in Amerika bezeugen, und ich war so aufgeregt, diese echten Zeichen echter Geschichte zu sehen.

Last but not least an confirmation about a prisoner of war mail to a friend? I´ll never find out.
Zu guter Letzt noch eine Bestätigung über eine Kriegsgefangenenpost an einen Freund? Ich werde es nie erfahren.

Maybe you have also relatives who spent their time in Texas during this era? I think it´s very exciting to hear more stories since I can´t ask anymore.
Vielleicht hat von euch jemand Verwandte, die diese Zeit in Texas verbracht haben? Ich fände es sehr aufregend, mehr Geschichten zu hören, da ich nicht mehr fragen kann.
