The famous Red Bishop is Orange at first.

Orange is the color for the current Gender violence campaign.

This is also an entry into the #POBphotocontest hosted by @friendlymoose

In the 70s orange was a groovy color, in the 90s it was chosen to signify value for money and now it is used for safety vests and other safety equipment.
By the way there is no word in the English language that rhymes with orange. No, "arrange" doesn't rhyme with "orange" :)
Did you know that orange is the only color in the color spectrum that was chosen from an object.
But I am here to talk about birds, so let me cut the c...!

Now what could this ugly little critter possibly be?

Oh! His tail part gave me a suspicion of what it was. A young Southern Red Bishop.

Now bear with me as I was taking the shots from a distance and the wind was not very friendly.
The birds sat on the grass stems inside the orange circle.

Now for a quick detour as there was also a Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus valatus) in the grass.
Here were two youngsters to show you what they look like. (Previously published by me)

There was the adult yellow masked weaver at the left with a busy young red bishop below at the right.

Two young red bishops here doing their thing in the grass.

Finally, a full frontal of a young Southern Red Bishop (Euplectes orix).
As they age they turn into a darker deep red color.

Did you know that the Papillon website was also done in orange?
We wanted to show that we were set apart to do the things that we do for the poor like no others. On a very special commission. Or should I say a life long mission.

I love the colors of the bishops and have taken many photos of them over the years. Also the Widow birds that I have posted here previously. The weaver population is present all over our country and in some provinces their colors differ. It seems that they change their colors to suit their environments.

It is a fairly gregarious bird, nesting in colonies and foraging in flocks. It feeds on seeds and some insects. It often roosts in mixed flocks with other members of the weaver family

The Southern Red Bishop occurs from South Africa north to Angola, southern and eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, northern Zambia southern Uganda north-east Nigeria and south-west Kenya. It is largely absent from the Namib Desert and Kalahari.
In the breeding season it is found near water among grass, reeds, sedges or crops such as sugar cane. Outside the breeding season it will venture into drier grassland and savanna habitats.

At the start of the breeding season, the males build several nests to attract females. They perform a display flight with their feathers fluffed up. They are polygynous and mate with several females. The nest is most commonly built among reeds and is made of grasses and other plant materials woven together. Two to four eggs are laid.
