How to handle a heatwave.

(Edited)

So what do you guys do during extreme temperatures of 40+Celsius ?
048.jpg

A severe heat warning was issued and this time it was 100% correct as we are really sweating here. During my time years ago in the army the hot days made everyone happy as we were banned to our barracks and no exercises or marching took place.
Even now during the heat I still keep all 3 of us indoors.

Late edit: The first time after 62 years
I saw in the news just in that some parts in Australia has just equaled the maximum temperature record of 50,7Celsius.

I liked this beautiful tropical picture and decided to include it here.
085.jpg

There are always signs in the sky to understand our local weather conditions and if the high wind rips a solid cloud into streamers like this, then it means that we can prepare for a very hot day.
015.jpg

The clouds collapsed onto the mountains and the sun beat down on them mercilessly.

026.jpg

EXTREME HEAT WARNING ISSUED
The weather service said the “very hot conditions” is the result of a predominantly light northerly wind flow over the interior of the Western Cape.

“Temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius and above are likely to occur over the Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Oudsthoorn municipalities,” said SAWS.

And finally, this is what a heat haze looks like. The heat in the mountains disintegrated the clouds and as you can see the heat produced a hazy look. Not good for man or beast to be near the mountain ovens.
002.jpg

So yes, what we do is we stay inside, except for me nipping out to take these kind of photos and we also drink plenty of water.
The nights are the worst as it is difficult to sleep in 28C temperatures and we cannot open the windows as an army of mosquitoes will enter the room and that is never good news.

Hypothermia is a big danger during these conditions and so one has to drink as much water as one can per day. What I cannot understand is that the beaches are open and I bet that there are many people on them trying to cool off in the ocean. A big danger as the sun's heat is above normal and sunstroke is not a vey pleasant condition.

So, as per my intro question, what do you do to keep cool during times like this?
Let me know in the comments below.

Thank you and yes, it is the decent thing to do and I suppose that you get many of these mishaps as it is honest mistakes.

Hide from the sun it bites at this time of year, yes people will be on beaches with some ending up on hospital beds later in the day.

Take care and stay indoors.

So bad to have to stay inside as I feel claustrophobic milady.
So we take short trips out and I try to stay in the shade wherever we go. We will see many sunstroke victims again as many will just not listen to good advice (including me) 🤣

I honestly don’t have an idea of how 39 degree Celsius and above feels.

I wouldn't know what to do in such an extreme heat. When it's too hot in the summer nights we open all windows and hope for some wind.

The cloud photos on the mountains look great though and seeing them wouldn't let me think it's that hot.

Wishing you that it cools down and a good weekend, Zac 😊

That's the problem Hannes, we cannot open the windows because the mosquitos will come in and have a party inside. So I am now starting to make mozzie screens for the windows.
They have screens on sale, but they are very expensive and so it is better to make my own.

I put the cloud photos in here to show how the day changes and that late afternoon haze clearly shows how hot it is.

Cheers and thanks.

Thank you and yes, we all hope that it will cool down. For this and the next month is going to be hell, as February is our hottest month.

Oh, that's right, you have told me about the mosquitos before. We don't have many of them here and they love my wife's blood more than mine 😉

We don't have such high temperatures here, so I can't tell.

It's time for me now - wish you a good evening, my friend 😊

Hahaha, now that you mention it I also vaguely remember that we discussed the mozzies before.

Lucky you is all that I can say. Severe heat makes people very rude and there is nothing pleasant about a very hot day. Besides sweating one's ears off behind a mask when going out is not my idea of fun 🤣

Hope that you had a good sleep mate.

Cheers and thanks.

Yep, I have had a good sleep 😀

I think when we suffer here on very hot days in summer you would come and take one more layer on because you think it's winter 😂 !LOLZ

How to handle a heatwave in January-February? Come and visit my country (Hungary). 😂

But seriously. Our annual average temperature is 9 °C.

Usually the February is our coldest month with often less than -20 °C. Our current cold record is -35.50 °C. This was on 2021.02.13.

The current temperature is 4 °C. The maximum was 6 °C today afternoon.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

I had an Hungarian uncle that was married to one of my mom's best friends (they were like sisters), years ago when I was a child. But sadly I didn't know him too well.

Wow, -35.50C is very cold as our big meat storage cold rooms over here run at -32C.
I also have friends in Austria and other cold countries and it is indeed a totally different lifestyle compared to what we have in Africa.

I suppose that I don't have to tell you to keep warm, as you are used to it !LOLZ

All of the best also to you my friend.

Oh man 40c ???? That's cool weather, we will get 2-3 week stretches here in the southwest that will run 114-118F (45-48c). I always tease the wife that it really doesn't get hot until we hit 106F (about 42c), at 113F we go from hot to hell! Fortunately, all our homes here have had swimming pools so that is great for keeping cool but yes sunstroke is a very real concern so we have large shade umbrellas over our sitting areas and even one on the side of the pool.

Many of our restaurants here that have outdoor seating have water misters under their awnings, the mist is super fine and evaporates just before it reaches you but it lowers the temperature drastically. You can sit out under a shaded awning and have a meal and not even break a sweat. I considered installing one on my own patio overhang but haven't got to it yet. Great thing is that they are powered simply by your water pressure, no electric pumps. You can buy kits on Amazon.com for a reasonable price. (Do you have amazon in South Africa? Maybe under a different name there?)

Swamp coolers work very well if the humidity isn't high. We had some large portable ones at a cabinet shop I worked in when I first moved here 20 years ago. You just hooked a garden hose up to them and plugged them in, kept the shop at about 35c when it was about 42c outside.

Fortunately, our summer is only 3-4 months long and the super hot heat seems to come in waves of 2-3 week highs 43c + temps then we get some cooler temps of around 40c for a week or two in between. The heat here is dryer most of the time but we do get a month of monsoon weather during July-August where the humidity gets to about 60-70% then it's just miserable.

Your squirrels are far luckier than you, at least they can cool off in the birdbath! 🤣🤣🤣

Great photos buy the way!!!

Oh yeah, that is indeed hot and I am glad that you know what I am talking about.
I edited the post today with news in that some areas in Australia have equaled a 62 year old record with 52,7C temperatures. So yes, hot is hot and one just have to survive.

Thank you for the advice and we have the misters here at some restaurants, but I think that they will be too expensive for us. It's not a thing that we can see at people's homes here. I will have a look at the prices.

Swamp coolers are new to me and no idea, but I will ask Mrs. Google as it sounds interesting and I have to keep our PC'S cool in the study. We have a little fan, but it only circulates hot air.

Our summer was at about 4 moths, but lately it has stayed hot into 6 months. We are situated with the Atlantic ocean at the west and the Indian ocean at the right and that's why we are known worldwide as "The Cape of Storms". This place is the graveyard of many ships along our coastlines. We are also known to have all 4 seasons in one day.
So yes it's a tricky, but beautiful place to live.

Yes thank you and you are right and the squirrels like to tease us.

Cheers and !BEER

I forgot about these spiffy little fan kits, more economic for outdoor cooling, don't want to use misters around electronics.

Mister kit for large fans.

Thank you for the link and it looks as if I can make a plan with these my friend.
You are correct about mist and electronics, as it will not do.

Here in Ireland it's front page news if the mercury hits 27, 28, 29 degrees Celsius! I remember from holidays though, a good one can be ice left on front of the fans in the bedroom can help. Maybe try that?

Lucky you are and my favorite temperatures are between 18-24C.
Yes it must have been difficult for you on holiday in the higher temperatures. Ice in front of the fan lasts for 30 minutes and then it has to be refilled. So it is a lot of up and downs from the bedroom to the kitchen and back.
I am looking for a more lasting solution.
