A farm dam outing!

362.JPG

Not any farm dam, as we didn't even know that there was something special under this fountain.

The umbrellas on the bank behind the fountain is where we stopped off to have a light lunch. Just a short Sunday outing to one of the wine farms that we have not visited before.
But what was under that fountain?

Yeah, congrats to those who guessed it, as there is a Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata) bird nest on that plastic floating crate below the fountain.

The wind changes the direction of the fountain water drop and every now and then the water falls on the nest, so the lady has to continue preening herself.

This was the road that we took to get to the farm.

And while we were waiting for the food order I took a stroll down this road, as I had seen something on that last tree next to the dam, on the left-hand side.

Ah! As I got closer I saw that it was an African Darter (Anhinga rufa).

But I got too close and he took off.

Always wonderful to discover new places and I also took a heap of dragonfly photos and other landscape shots that I will show in other posts. As for this post, let me just say that there are many unexpected finds awaiting us in the area behind our own mountains and this was one of them.

And That's All Friends!

Note: All photos are my own and taken with a Canon Powershot SX60HS Bridge camera.

We hope that you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

These birds have found the perfect place for hot days. On hot Summer days I often wish to have such an automatically shower 🚿

I thought all the birds must know you by now and that you only love to take photos of them. The African Darter must be new here 😉

This place looks quite inviting, Zac, I hope you you have had a great time and delicious food there 😃

So strange that she built her nest on that raft and it turs out to be a brilliant idea Hannes.
Her babies will automatically get used to the water and she can cool off on the hot days, as there is always wind around that will shower her.

Hahaha, yes I think that Darter is following me, as I got him on another farm before (If it's the same one) 🤣

Sadly Marian had her first order sent back, but in my case I had a deep fried piece of Eisbein and it did not taste like the slow cooked one. But the German mustard and the Sauerkraut made up for it.
We will not eat there again, but the place is beautiful and I will go and take more photos there at their 3 dams.

Cheers and thanks.

Cheers and thanks.

I wouldn't go back there eating when something wasn't alright, especially if I need mustard and sauerkraut to make it taste okay 😁 But if can take nice photos at a place I will go back too ... but not to eat 😂

Darn, that is one beautiful place you found. I have a feeling that you guys may be going back to this winery again.
The fountain spraying water towards the heavens, creating a rainbow is a awesome picture.
The area where you live must be a bird sanctuary or the birds just hear that @papilloncharity is in the area and they want to have their picture taken and sent around the world on #hive.
You caught another bird in flight which always amazes me.

I never realized just how beautiful South Africa is. It's hard to believe that there is so much strife in such a peaceful looking place.

Thank you and oh yes, there are many farms waiting for us to visit my friend.
Our next target for now is a big strawberry farm, as I saw that they have some dams there and I am hoping to get the African Fish Eagle again.

Yes, I think that the squirrels have established a modelling agency and prospective bird models must pay them with nuts before they will send them to me. Something is going on for sure 🤣
Hahaha, no, it's the farms and plenty of food here that draws the wildlife my friend.

South Africa has a bad history of great struggles and wars and now everyone that was once enemies are now mixed together here. So many "never forgets" are living here and it has always been a battle for domination by the nations.
Such is life.

Cheers and !BEER
