Este libro, escrito por el venezolano Fernando Báez en el año 2004, es un aterrador y, contradictoriamente, fascinante viaje por la catástrofe en la que fue sumido el enorme tesoro cultural de Irak, uno de los más bárbaros crímenes del mundo moderno. El autor, lejos de introducirse en el exclusivo mundo documental o hemerográfico, viajó hasta ese país para comprobar de primera mano todo lo que había obtenido hasta entonces por otras fuentes.

This book, written by Venezuelan Fernando Baez in 2004, is a terrifying and, contradictorily, fascinating journey through the catastrophe in which the enormous cultural treasure of Iraq was plunged, one of the most barbaric crimes of the modern world. The author, far from entering the exclusive documentary or newspaper world, traveled to that country to verify at first hand everything he had obtained until then from other sources.

El libro cuenta, por un lado, los riesgos que el autor corrió en su viaje a Irak, un recorrido en los que no pocas veces puso en peligro su propia vida. Estaba, ese país, en uno de los momentos más álgidos de la confrontación posterior a la llegada de las tropas extranjeras a Bagdad. Esta condición le otorga un valor mucho más grande a este texto y nos habla de hasta dónde puede llegar un investigador en la búsqueda de la verdad.

The book tells, on the one hand, the risks that the author took on his trip to Iraq, a journey in which he often put his own life in danger. This country was in one of the most critical moments of the confrontation after the arrival of foreign troops in Baghdad. This condition gives a much greater value to this text and tells us how far a researcher can go in the search for the truth.

Pero, lo más importante de este documento, que hoy es libro de consulta en 18 universidades de todo el mundo, es que deja testimonio fiel de la enorme calamidad sufrida por la cultura universal, concretada en datos que el autor muestra como prueba fehaciente de que, por sobre todas las cosas, el daño hecho al conocimiento y a la historia es sencillamente irreparable. Millones de libros, documentos manuscritos, piezas artísticas y artesanales de diversas épocas, ejemplares originales de libros como “Las mil y una noches”, destruidos por los incendios que desconocieron leyes internacionales. Sitios arqueológicos contentivos de verdaderos tesoros para la humanidad, fueron saqueados hasta el último de sus objetos.

But the most important thing about this document, which today is a reference book in 18 universities all over the world, is that it is a faithful testimony of the enormous calamity suffered by universal culture, concretized in data that the author shows as irrefutable proof that, above all, the damage done to knowledge and history is simply irreparable. Millions of books, handwritten documents, artistic and handcrafted pieces from different periods, original copies of books such as "The Thousand and One Nights", destroyed by fires that disregarded international laws. Archaeological sites containing true treasures for humanity were plundered to the last of their objects.

Es pues, este texto, una obra de un valor incalculable para determinar el daño, pero además, para denunciar la necesidad de que algo así no vuelva a ocurrir jamás. Las generaciones futuras no contarán, para su desdicha, con el testimonio que los objetos y documentos destruidos habían legado a la historia del mundo.

This text is therefore a work of incalculable value to determine the damage, but also to denounce the need for something like this to never happen again. Future generations will not have, to their misfortune, the testimony that the destroyed objects and documents had bequeathed to the history of the world.

“Y entonces sobrevino lo que creí una pesadilla: encontré una atmósfera de guerra en el más craso estilo. La luz, filtrada con reservas y ambigüedad por las ventanas, dejaba a la vista muebles destrozados por doquier y miles de papeles en el piso. La sala de lectura, el fichero de madera con el catálogo de todos los libros y los estantes mismos han sido literalmente arrasados sin piedad.”

"And then came what I thought was a nightmare: I found an atmosphere of war in the crassest style. The light, filtered with reservations and ambiguity through the windows, left in sight shattered furniture everywhere and thousands of papers on the floor. The reading room, the wooden file with the catalog of all the books and the shelves themselves had literally been mercilessly razed to the ground."
