I think the insatiable desire for more is/was essential in humanity's progress. Without it, we might not have moved on from hunting for food. We desire stability, safety, and comfort. Striving for greatness and improvement has created inventions and understanding that continue to push us forward.

It was incredibly important for the survival of our species. Now, it has been incredibly useful for the success of our species. At the same time, it prevents us from feeling truly satisfied. However, if we started to lose our desire for more, we might lose our competitive edge. It's a bizarre double-edged sword.

I agree. As with a lot of things, balance is the key. Too much, and we hurt others for personal gain. Too little, and we become complacent and lack the drive.
