White lies - Those 'little' supposedly harmless lies, which one do you tell?

At times we tend to tell lies that seems not to affect us in any way not knowing that it may affect the other person. But sometimes when you are being truthful, you may hurt someone's feelings, all these things makes us to tell lies that seems to be harmless to them. Before going further I will like to start with the definition White lies.

White lies is a lie about a small or unimportant matter that someone tells to avoid hurting another person. Sometimes you might decide to tell your mother that her meatloaf is delicious when you know fully well that you hate the meatloaf or telling your friend that her outfit is very fine and that it suits her very well when it is the direct opposite of it.

The reason we choose to tell these lies is to avoid people from being hurt or to avoid causing them sadness. At times, we ask ourselves if telling lies is good or bad. I remember some years back when I visited my mom and she prepared bitter leaf soup with enough meat, stock fish, the soup was very rich but I never wanted to eat even with all the tempting meat and fish because I wasn't use to that kind of meal but I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I ate the food, I even told her that the soup was very delicious. Everything I did was just to make her happy and am glad I was able to do that. I also remembered when I had to lie to a friend that I was having a stomach pain just because I never wanted to visit him 🤣🤣.

At times telling little lies can make someone happy while at times, it may worsen the case especially when the person finds out the truth.

Are white lies good or bad?

In most cases, we tell lies that help others, it may also be for our own benefits. The most important thing here is that no one is harmed. But in a situation where you tell a lie that harm the other person just for your own benefit, is a very bad one on your own part.

Some 'white lies' are not dishonest at all and some would be borderline cases. But it is not adviceable to tell white lies when it comes to your business or at your place of work. You wouldn't want to start up your business with a lie. Telling white lies sometimes gives room for you to lie more often and this can damage your business. There are usually better alternative to lies because you never can tell how being truthful can help someone that moment.

What are the little lies you have told someone? You might think those little lies is just to help the person or to protect the person's feelings.

Hmmmm... This one is a hot case. Lol.

In the midst of all this Crypto saga, I decided to freeze my Crypto related Apps. Same goes for WhatsApp and Facebook. Those Apps have never been interesting to me 😂.

There was an incident that happened last month when I was traveling to Lagos. I met some police officers that were going through people's phone. I know how to keep things hidden so, my phone was too clean (empty) for their liking. They were angry to see that I didn't even have WhatsApp on my phone 😂😂.

Of course, it's there, but they couldn't find it. And I'm not in the mood to shoot myself on the leg 😂😂. So, yeah, I stood there and played innocent 😂.

I guess that's a sort of white-ish lie displayed by my action Heheh.

This goes to @dreemport ✌️

I have told white lies or more like omitting a truth but that's because I know my truth will hurt and at the same time everything will be status quo.

But I have to say, when I cook, I always tell the kids to tell me the truth and they do because then I can either not make it again or find a better way of making it :D

It's always good to say the truth at least your kids were able to tell you the truth.

Thanks for passing by ☺️

Hello @otuyanancy. You present interesting case scenarios about the ethics of lying, even those that one would deem small and of no consequence. Everyone has told some version of the truth that is not exactly correct. Yes, people often tell others things that they think will not hurt their feelings. Whether to do it or not is a case for the individual to decide.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE
I wanted to bring something to your attention. The two photos you included in your post were not sourced. Whenever you include any information in your posts that is not your property, you are required to provide the site and author. If you are including photos, then you are required to give credit to the owner of the photos IF they are free to use in the first place.

For example, your second image I found by performing a google search. Images from a Google search are not free to use in your posts UNLESS you click through the link under the image and locate the owner to find out whether the image is free to use.

Please edit your post to include the sourcing of the images only if you have been given permission to use the photos. If not, then locate suitable replacements from sites that offer free photos.

A few such sites are:

Pexels

Thanks for your consideration.

Thank you for your kind words. There is another Hive member who commented on the post also that instructed @otuyanancy how to source his images with the correct syntax once she locates free images to use. That was really nice.

I think the reason why people engage in white lies is because we human beings do not like to hear the truth, so we prefer been lied to and makes us happy than saying the real truth. They will say the truth is always bitter. So we end up telling white lies just to make them happy.

In most cases the reason we tell white lies like you say is normally to save someone else from getting hurt but sometimes even that white lie can turn out to hurt seriously when the people we tried to protect in the first place find out what we have done.
A necessary evil we have to make to keep the peace as long as we don't overdo it.

Ps: Good job on the post but next time please try to add the source of the images you use on your posts unless they are pictures taken by you ✌

hi @otuyanancy I see by inspecting these pics that they came off the free to use Pexels site. Not sure if you have already sourced these after reading the other comments here or whether these were your original photo choices. Either way, you are required to note your sources for any photos used that are not your own or for any quotations of passages of text that is not your own. The way to do this is through the use of brackets. You use the brackets just as shown here with no space between the 2 different sets of brackets. in the first set you type the words you want to appear in your article such as [source] or you could say [Photo by Fauxels on Pexels] for example. Then in the second set of brackets you insert the URL from the photo page like this (https://www.pexels.com/photo/photo-of-man-holding-pen-3182752/) ... when put together you get Photo by Fauxels on Pexels. I hope this helps. Interesting issue raised in the article by the way. It is truly difficult when put in a position where you don't want to hurt someone's feelings. I try to be diplomatic instead of tell white lies. Sometimes I admit I will not reveal all there is to know about something if I feel it would unnecessarily cause hurt or harm, but I won't lie about the situation if I can help it ... I guess it depends it depends on who we are dealing with.
