I was asked to draw an ink portrait of Kakashi Hatake, a character from the anime Naruto. They told me they wanted a portrait of the character to put in a frame, so here’s a glimpse of the process.

Me pidieron dibujar un retrato en tinta de Kakashi Hatake, el cual es un personaje del anime Naruto. Me dijeron que querían un retrato del personaje para colocarlo en un marco, así que acá les comparto un poco del proceso.

I started by sketching the character, and to do that, I obviously looked for some references on Pinterest, since my client didn’t give me a specific one—he just told me to draw a portrait of him. I found a reference that fit the bill, and that’s what helped me create this drawing.

Comencé haciendo el boceto del personaje y para esto, es evidentemente que busque algunas referencias del personaje en Pinterest, ya que mi cliente no me dio una en especifico, solo me dijo que fuera un retrato del mismo. Encontré una referencia que fue la indica y fue la que me ayudo a hacer este dibujo.

After spending quite a while sketching, I finally finished it and started painting it. They asked me to make the portrait as realistic and simple as possible; of course, they wanted it in black and white, so I suggested doing it in ink, and they agreed.

Después de haber estado un buen rato haciendo el boceto, por fin lo tuve hecho y comienzo a pintarlo. Me pidieron que el retrato fuese lo mas nominalista y simple, por supuesto me lo pidieron en blanco y negro y fue cuando le propuse hacerlo en tinta y me dijo que si.

I began inking the entire drawing, starting with light layers and working my way to darker ones to create a good sense of contrast. I’ve always used ink diluted with water to achieve different shades. After two days, I finished this drawing, pleased that my client liked it, and I hope you do too.

Comencé a pintar todo el dibujo con tinta, comenzando a colocar capas claras a oscuras, para así hacer un buen trabajo de contraste. Siempre he trabajado la tinta diluida con agua, para lograr diferentes tonos con la misma. Y después de dos días, termino este dibujo con la satisfacción de que le ha gustado a mi cliente y espero que a ustedes también.
