Hello Hivernauts

I have the privilege of living in the capital of the largest state in Venezuela, Bolivar State. This region is home to the largest and oldest indigenous communities in the country that preserve much of their culture and customs intact.

This weekend I had the opportunity to venture briefly to one of the most fascinating communities of the Kamarata Valley in Canaima National Park. Although it was only for one day, I was able to enjoy the experience of sharing with these wonderful people who live in the Uruyén Camp.

This is not a trip for conventional tourists, nor a luxury getaway to relax by the beach. It is an adventure for those determined to experience the authentic and dazzling indigenous culture of Uruyén, in the Kamarata Valley.

When we arrived, they were building walls of one of their Churuatas (huts), their characteristic construction with organic materials, showing the ingenuity and respect of these natives towards Mother Earth. They are huts raised from the ground with wooden stilts, interwoven branches and covered with mud to form the walls, their roofs are made of palm leaves.

This connection with nature is reflected in each of their architectural developments, showing you a new perspective on how to interact with our environment and their ingenious way of taking advantage of the natural resources that surround them.

Visiting these tourist camps found throughout the Kamarata Valley, you will be welcomed with open arms by the Kamarakoto people, a friendly and joyful people who have preserved their culture and traditions throughout the centuries. It will be a fascinating opportunity to learn about their rituals, music, dance and the ancient wisdom they impart.

You will discover that the trip to Uruyén is not just a tourist experience, but a journey to the heart of a primitive culture that still lives on in our modern world. It will take you back to your roots, allow you to appreciate a completely different way of life and fill you with humility and admiration for the diversity of the world we live in.

To get to Uruyén you must take a local flight in small planes or helicopters, these are services offered by many local tourist companies. You will find different options to get to know the Kamarata Valley, from one-day trips to the possibility of staying as long as you want, staying in their cabins and touring the valley and its natural wonders.

I hope to return soon and continue enjoying these enriching encounters in which I can share with the ancestral cultures of southern Venezuela.
