¿Alguna vez has tenido la curiosidad de ser estudiante de intercambio?
Ser estudiante de Intercambio es la mejor experiencia que puedes tener en tu vida.
Si bien te puede tomar un año de preparación para que cuando llegues al país, todo te tenga bajo control.
Hay muchas organizaciones para hacer intercambio estudiantil en el extranjero: Rotary, AFS, Kaplan, EF entre otros.
En mi caso me fuí por AFS, la cual fue una excelente organización, ellos me dieron herramientas a lo largo de 1 año de preparación, dónde hacíamos reuniones al menos 2 a 3 veces al mes. ¿Y cuál es el objetivo de esto? Y la respuesta es: Enfrentar el choque cultural y saber manejar las situaciones.

Have you ever been curious to be an exchange student? Being an Exchange student is the best experience you can have in your life. Although it may take you a year of preparation so that when you arrive in the country, everything has you under control. There are many organizations to do student exchange abroad: Rotary, AFS, Kaplan, EF among others. In my case, I went to AFS, which was an excellent organization, they gave me tools throughout the 1 year of preparation, where we held meetings at least 2 to 3 times a month. And what is the purpose of this? And the answer is: Face culture shock and know how to handle situations.

A continuación te daré unos tips desde la preparación hasta que te encuentres en el país, además algunas de mis anécdotas.

TIPS preparación como futuro estudiante de intercambio:

TIPS preparation as a future exchange student:

• Investigar sobre el país que deseas conocer: Debes buscar suficiente información sobre ello para estar seguro sobre tu decisión, hay países que según su religión o costumbres pueden afectar tus valores, situación que debes tomar en cuenta.

• Investigate about the country you want to know: You should find enough information about it to be sure about your decision, there are countries that depending on their religion or customs can affect your values, a situation that you must take into account.

• Realizar un perfil completo sobre ti: Normalmente las distintas empresas para hacer el intercambio te solicitan hacer un perfil, en mi caso con AFS debía describirme, ya que dicho perfil iba a ser enviado al país que fue asignada y las familias del país anfitrión tendrían los distintos perfiles de los estudiante de intercambio y ellos escogen según su preferencia, entonces en dichos perfiles debes describirte tal cual eres, las cosas que te gustan hacer y también las que no te gusta o disgustan y cuando hablo de ser específico es que debes agregar hasta si eres alérgico a algo como por ejemplo a los perros o gatos, debido que en el caso de Europa la mayoría tienen mascotas en casa. Así que no temas en lo que dirán, describirte tal como eres aumentará la probabilidad de conseguir una familia en que ambas partes se sientan a gusto, en AFS las familias anfitrionas son fijas por un año, por ello es tan importante que se puedan llevar muy bien.
  Les comento que mi perfil fue bastante extenso, agregue muchas fotos tanto de mi, de mi familia, mis actividades diarias y fotos con mi hermano, quien para entonces era un bebé de 3 años y eso fué lo que cautivó a mi familia anfitriona porque su hija menor tenía 10 años y ellos me comentaron que esa foto les dió seguridad que yo podría ser una buena hermana de intercambio. Y gracias a ello mi relación con mi familia anfitriona fue excelente, me sentí como en casa.

• Make a complete profile about you: Normally the different companies to do the exchange ask you to make a profile, in my case with AFS I had to describe myself, since said profile was going to be sent to the country that was assigned and the families of the host country would have the different profiles of the exchange students and they choose according to their preference, then in these profiles you must describe yourself as you are, the things that you like to do and also those that you do not like or dislike and when I speak of being specific, you must add even if you are allergic to something such as dogs or cats, because in the case of Europe most have pets at home. So do not be afraid of what they will say, describing yourself as you are will increase the probability of getting a family in which both parties feel comfortable, in AFS the host families are fixed for one year, that is why it is so important that they can get along very well. I comment that my profile was quite extensive, I added many photos of myself, my family, my daily activities and photos with my brother, who by then was a 3-year-old baby and that was what captivated my host family because his Youngest daughter was 10 years old and they told me that this photo gave them assurance that I could be a good exchange sister. And thanks to that my relationship with my host family was excellent, I felt at home.

• Aprender un poco sobre el idioma: Es importante tener nociones básicas del idioma. Antes de irme a Suiza había hecho un curso básico de alemán. Algunas familias saben más de un idioma y para quienes saben inglés es de bastante ayuda en el inicio, pero en ocasiones esto no sucede y la comunicación se basa en señas o buscando en internet jajaja

• Learn a little about the language: It is important to have basic notions of the language. Before going to Switzerland I had taken a basic German course. Some families know more than one language and for those who know English it is quite helpful at the beginning, but sometimes this does not happen and communication is based on signs or searching on the internet hahaha

• "Al país que fueres haz lo que vieres": Me encanta ese dicho, porque apenas tomes esta decisión de aventurarte, es importante tener en cuenta que debes abrir tu mente al máximo y saber que debes tomar nuevas costumbres, no hacer alguna mala cara puesto que podría ser de mal gusto a la familia, dado que ellos buscan la mejor manera de hacerte sentir como en casa.
  Es increíble como somos un mundo con una diversidad de costumbres hasta un saludo marca la diferencia, en Venezuela solemos saludar de mano o un beso en la mejilla algún conocido. En Suiza los besos al saludar son a las personas de confianza, quien tenemos tiempo conociendo además que son 3 besos, cuando llegaba ese momento para mí me concentraba porque en algunas ocasiones chocaba o dejaba a la persona esperando, no era mi intención a veces lo olvidaba y pasaba por una pena jajaja.

• "To the country that you are, do what you see": I love that saying, because as soon as you make this decision to venture, it is important to keep in mind that you must open your mind to the maximum and know that you must adopt new customs, not make a bad face since it could be in bad taste to the family, since they look for the best way to make you feel at home. It is incredible how we are a world with a diversity of customs, even a greeting makes a difference, in Venezuela we usually greet someone with the hand or a kiss on the cheek. In Switzerland the kisses when greeting are to trusted people, who we have known for a long time that there are also 3 kisses, when that moment came for me I concentrated because sometimes I crashed or left the person waiting, it was not my intention sometimes forgot and went through a pity hahaha.

• Investiga sobre paisajes, sitios históricos, héroes, cantantes, artistas famosos de la localidad en fin cualquier tema que despierte interes en ambas partes

• Investigate landscapes, historical sites, heroes, singers, famous artists of the town, in short, any topic that arouses interest on both sides

• Prepara algunos regalos a la familia: En tu maleta no debes olvidar algún regalo a tu familia anfitriona, no debe ser regalos ostentoso, mi recomendación es que debe ser regalos con algún valor sentimental, algo típico de tu país, que cada vez que lo vean te recuerde.
  A mí familia les regale gorras de Venezuela, Ron Venezolano y fue la mejor idea porque cuando mi papá anfitrión tomaba un pequeño shot de ron, de verdad lo degustaba y decía que era exquisito.

Prepare some gifts for the family: In your suitcase you should not forget a gift to your host family, it should not be ostentatious gifts, my recommendation is that it should be gifts with some sentimental value, something typical of your country, that every time they see it remember you. I gave my family caps from Venezuela, Venezuelan Rum and it was the best idea because when my host dad had a small shot of rum, he really tasted it and said it was exquisite.
