Monção Village Center - Alto Minho / Riding Portugal

Monção, a small and charming village located in the north of Portugal, is a place that overflows with history, culture and a unique charm. We had the opportunity to explore the center of the village, a place that, at first glance, seems to have stopped in time, but which gradually reveals the secrets of its rich heritage.

Monção, uma pequena e encantadora vila situada no norte de Portugal, é um local que transborda história, cultura e um charme único. Tivemos a oportunidade de explorar o centro da vila, um lugar que, à primeira vista, parece ter parado no tempo, mas que revela, aos poucos, os segredos da sua rica herança.

Upon arrival, the first impression is that Monção is welcoming, with narrow, winding streets lined with stone houses and colorful facades. The historic center of the village is a true testament to the Minho tradition, with the architecture reflecting the simplicity and beauty of the old regional buildings. The squares, small but full of life, are always full of people, with the sound of conversations and the running around of the little ones.

Ao chegar, a primeira impressão é a de que Monção é acolhedora, com ruas estreitas e sinuosas, ladeadas por casas de pedra e fachadas coloridas. O centro histórico da vila é um verdadeiro testemunho da tradição minhota, com a arquitetura a refletir a simplicidade e beleza das antigas construções regionais. As praças, pequenas mas repletas de vida, estão sempre cheias de gente, com o som de conversas e a correria dos mais pequenos.

The starting point of this visit was Praça Deu-la-Deu Martins, where there is an imposing statue of Deu-la-Deu Martins, a historical figure who marked the history of Monção. The square is surrounded by old buildings and preserved architecture, with several terraces.

O ponto de partida desta visita foi a Praça Deu-la-Deu Martins, onde se ergue uma imponente estátua de Deu-la-Deu Martins, figura histórica que marcou a história de Monção. A praça é rodeada por edifícios antigos e por uma arquitetura que se mantém preservada, com várias esplanadas.

Following the streets that intertwine through the center of the town, it is impossible not to be captivated by the beauty of the courtyards, churches and small gardens. The Church of Santa Maria dos Anjos, one of the town's religious landmarks, is one of the most emblematic places in the center. Its imposing architecture and serene atmosphere provide a sense of peace and contemplation, inviting reflection.

Seguindo pelas ruas que se entrelaçam pelo centro da vila, é impossível não se deixar envolver pela beleza dos pátios, das igrejas e dos pequenos jardins . A Igreja de Santa Maria dos Anjos, um dos marcos religiosos da vila, é um dos locais mais emblemáticos do centro. A sua arquitetura imponente e o ambiente sereno proporcionam uma sensação de paz e contemplação, convidando à reflexão.

Local commerce is another point that draws attention in Monção. Small shops, many of them run by local families, offer typical local products, such as wines, sweets and handicrafts. Local products, such as the famous Monção green wine, are true treasures that deserve to be tasted.

O comércio local é outro dos pontos que chama a atenção em Monção. Pequenas lojas, muitas delas geridas por famílias da região, oferecem produtos típicos da terra, como vinhos, doces e artesanato. Os produtos locais, como o famoso vinho verde de Monção, são verdadeiros tesouros que merecem ser degustados.

When lunch time came, the choice fell on the 7 à 7 restaurant, a simple place, but with a food proposal that reflects the authenticity and flavor of Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant is small, cozy and has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a quiet meal after a morning exploring the town center. The menu is diverse, but with a clear focus on regional flavors. One of the house specialties is, for example, Portuguese stew or cod (a classic of Portuguese cuisine). We opted for the steak as we still had a long way to go and needed energy.

Chegada a hora do almoço, a escolha recaiu sobre o restaurante 7 à 7, um local simples, mas com uma proposta de comida que reflete a genuinidade e sabor da cozinha portuguesa. O restaurante é pequeno, acolhedor e com um ambiente descontraído, perfeito para uma refeição tranquila depois de uma manhã a explorar o centro da vila. O menu é diversificado, mas com um foco claro nos sabores da região. Uma das especialidades da casa é por exemplo o cozido à portuguesa ou o bacalhau (um clássico da gastronomia portuguesa) Optamos pela posta pois ainda tínhamos muito que andar e precisávamos de energia.

The space, with modern decor but without losing its traditional touch, is made even more pleasant by the friendliness of the staff, who are always available to suggest dishes and introduce local specialties. The 7 à 7 restaurant is a true reflection of Minho hospitality, and without a doubt a place to recommend to anyone visiting Monção.
After lunch, we continued our discovery that I will bring to you here but on another day.

O espaço, com uma decoração moderna, mas sem perder o toque tradicional, torna-se ainda mais agradável pela simpatia dos funcionários, sempre disponíveis para sugerir pratos e dar a conhecer as especialidades locais. O restaurante 7 à 7 é um verdadeiro reflexo da hospitalidade minhota, e sem dúvida um local a recomendar a quem visita Monção.
Após o almoço, continuamos a nossa descoberta que vos vou trazer aqui mas num outro dia.
