What's In Your Water?

Water permeates every cell in our bodies. So, it's been my goal for a long time to drink the cleanest, purest water I can. Over the years, I've done a lot of research on different filters and water purifying techniques.

For a brief period, I tried drinking distilled water. Distilled water is first boiled into steam. The steam then cools and condenses back into a liquid where it collects in a separate container.

As far as purity goes, water doesn't get any purer. The distillation process removes pretty much everything except the H2O. It's the best tasting water I've ever drank.

But, there is some debate over whether distilled water is healthy for people. Distilling water doesn't just remove the bad things, it also removes the minerals that our bodies require. So, if you drink distilled water, it's important to make sure you're getting those minerals elsewhere.

I decided the best course for me would be using filters. Not the charcoal filters you get at the store. I wanted more than the bare minimum. Luckily, I found what I consider to be the best filter out there.

I like the simple gravity-feed system. This is the view when looking into the top, filtering part. The two filters were a day old when this picture was taken. Bright, white ceramic. The first level of filtering. The middle of the filters contain the grittier filtering elements, including charcoal.

After passing through the filters, the purified water then drips down into the bottom section where it's ready to drink.

As I mentioned, those filters where a day old in that picture. For comparison, I also took a picture of the old filters. You can see why I'm so fanatical about my water.

These filters were dry the time I took this. So, the orange build-up was dry and flaking off in places. This created a stark contrast with the white ceramic underneath.

When I removed these filter, they were still wet. I know to where gloves because the orange gunk stains your fingers. I'm happy that none of that entered my body.

I highly encourage everyone to be aware of the quality of water they consume and look into filtration systems. I don't endorse any particular one, but I'd be happy to give my recommendation.

We have a Berkey which is a gravity feed. Our water has super high iron in it and even after the iron filter and water softener we still pull stuff out with the filters in the Berkey. Best tasting water I have ever had was from the well at my Grandmother's hotel by Yosemite, the well is an artesian and comes right out of the granite of the Sierras.

Yes, nothing beats all-natural. Those Berkey filters are comparable to what I use and are very good.
