ROBBERY IN BROAD DAYLIGHT: Are Banks The New Thieves?

Back in the day, banks were the safest places to keep our money. Unfortunately, right now there's so much thievery happening in our banks that makes you open your mouth in disbelief. .

What exactly is wrong with our Banking system in Nigeria?

It's so bad that I'd be more comfortable saving my money the way my forefathers saved theirs, at home; under their beds, buried, in bottles, wooden boxes, calabashes, jars or anywhere else.

There have been reports of people losing huge sums of money to hackers. Even my dad was a victim earlier this year. All of his accounts were wiped clean.

Till date I do not know how much was stolen from him because my dad would rather twerk than tell us how much money he has in total(you know I'm kidding about the twerk yeah?🙃)

Adewale Mustapha, an FCT-based visual designer, has recalled how the X BANK debited his account with over N2 million from his account for a Sportybet transaction he did not initiate.

To my surprise, when I spoke with the bank’s customer care representative on Sunday, I was told by the lady who spoke to me to forget about the stolen fund because I would not be able to retrieve it.”

Furthermore, Mr. Adewale was told by one of the managers that they'd get back to him but there was no specific date in mind. He was told he had to wait for the fraud team to decipher where the problem came from.

Where was the fraud team when the account was being hacked in the first place? Where? ( inserts terrible cuss words in my mind)

Unlike Mr. Adewale who was smart and swift enough to transfer what was left of his money to another account, several others weren't lucky.

I read a report on Twitter about a lady whose entire savings of # 6 million naira (about $14,000) was withdrawn from her account while she was in a banking hall. She had been saving the money for years. She intended to study for her masters only to lose it the way she did. She was devastated.

Like thousands of other Nigerians, complaints were made and the banks seem to be very lackadaisical about their attitudes towards retrieving stolen funds. Totally forgetting that this is life, blood and sweat of the victims .

I saw the video of a man whose #155, 000 was stolen from his account carting away the bank's printer while daring any of the security men to approach him. I laughed but I understood his reaction.

How can I tell you that my money was stolen and your next logical reply is that I should pray? Gotta be out of your mind to tell me that after allowing my account to get robbed.

The question is, is it a case of bank staff collaborating with thieves by releasing sensitive information to make hacking seamless for them? Are we the ones who have been too careless with our private banking details?

The most amount of money that disappeared from my account was #20,000( about $50 CBN rate), and I went there every day of the week till I got my money back. I work hard for every dime I have and no bank is permitted to mess with my money.

While some of our banks are committed to resolving these thefts, others remain nonchalant. I cannot begin to list all the banks here for very good reasons.

I'm not a millionaire yet, so here's what I do with the few hundreds I own. I have four different bank accounts and so I just split my money in all four.

If the banks cannot protect the chicken change I own, I'd do it my own way.

After all, at the end of the day, all they do is apologise and say they'd look into it only to have you wait for months or even years to no avail.

When all of this thievery began, it was only in a few banks, but now, it may seem as though the theft virus is widespread and we can only hope it is completely resolved soon.

Until then, be careful with your ATM cards because some of these POS operators are wild.

Always wear a bubu dress/ Agbada when going to use an ATM just so you have enough clothing to cover the entire screen.

To my Nigerian and non Nigerian hivers, has this ever happened to you?

I don’t know your dad, but the twerk thing made me laugh real hard.😂😂😂😂

A few friends of mine who are Nigerians mentioned in one if our recent conversations how he had reason to believe the hacks and bank theft were not normal hacks or robberies.

According to them, the fraudsters who called them several times all knew their names, so they believed their credentials was released to them by someone in the bank staff.

I haven’t heard anything like this happen with banks in Ghana though. Ghanaian fraudsters target mobile money users)which is almost the entire country’s population). The unfortunately people who fall victim to their schemes are the old and illiterates.

Nigerian banks are the greatest thieves in the country after politicians. I remember when someone sent money to me for a job, I did not receive an alert and then I wanted to check for another money that was sent to me, only to see extra cash there. I had to trace my transactions to find out who sent it.

Few days later when I went to withdraw the money so I could do the job, I found that about $10 was missing. Till today nobody has been able to tell me what happened to my money. I had to use my own money to compete the job.

These guys are simply fraudsters in suits and ties

Actually I do think it's mostly the bank operatives that are working with the scammer's.

It hasn't happened to me sha, if it did I would be trending on Twitter or Instagram.
