Marketing In Real Estate: A Dream Job Or A Nightmare?

Yesterday, whilst I was strolling in my estate sometime in the evening, an extremely lovely car drove by and parked not far from where I was. I heard the horn twice, but I wasn't going to approach that car, no matter how nice it looked, not now, 😂.

I didn't approach him until he rolled down and I saw a familiar face. Long story short, the man asked me what I was doing for work at the moment. I told him I was working remotely, to which he said straight up,

I've got a job for you. However, it’s for the role of a marketer in a real estate firm.

I'm not kidding when I say my eyeballs literally popped out of their sockets, and I think I heard two drum beats in my head. The kind of drumming you hear when war is about to begin. He went on to tell me how well the organization pays. All I had to do was accept.

As I type this, I am yet to respond to the man because, while I prefer the notion of establishing or starting a career in real estate, I don't enjoy the idea of working under pressure 24/7, because sales executives are frequently required to reach or meet a specific target monthly, quarterly, or annually. And if they don't, there are consequences.

Marketing does not appear to be my strong suit, except when it is digital, and I'd explain why.

Some years back, I had just graduated from university. I went home to my folks the following day after finishing my last paper in school. Barely a week after graduation, a distant relative called to inform me he had a marketing job for me.

I didn't think much of it at the time. After all, it was just a job. Obviously, I was desperate to get out of my parents' house. I was bored out of my mind and sick of the chores and errands that never seemed to end in that house, even today.

In fact, when he notified me about the job, I literally yelled with delight. As a matter of fact, when he told me about the job, I legit screamed for joy. I had just graduated a week before and here I was receiving a job offer on a silver platter... lol... if only I knew. I packed my things the next day since the corporation provided me with accommodation because my relative was a top shot there at the time.

Ladies and gentlemen, I realized on the first day that 'waka-waka' (moving from place to place) marketing wasn't for me. I also realized that all of the incentives I had been told about were based on unrealistic conditions. My heart literally broke.

On the first day, about 18 new marketers came, including me, and we set out for what they called "fieldwork." The task was to go around and converse with individuals about the organization and get a minimum of five people to make a purchase on the spot. I know what you’re thinking, ‘just five?’ Wait until you understand what I mean.

Well, just four people showed up the next day, including me. For starters, the conditions tied to the incentives were absurd. For example, if you make fewer than five sales per day, you do not receive the stipend for that day. It wasn't even a significant sum.

Only two of us showed up on the third day. Everyone else had quit. I became ill on the fourth day. I was stressed to my marrows from walking about in the sun and going from company to company and store to store to advertise what we were selling. On the 5th day, I packed my bags and went straight home.

I’ll never forget how my dad burst into a hysterical fit of laughter when I told him what I had to do. Basically, it was for a food delivery company. We were to go about telling people about them and trying to convince at least five people to place an order for food right there in our presence.

We ensured the food was delivered to the customer on schedule from the outlet. And no, the food wasn’t cheap. I was lucky to have made a few sales during my stay, but I never reached the 5 persons per day target. The most I accomplished was 4 per day.

On the fourth day, I remember just chilling in a bank and asking myself if the 5 years I spent studying at the university were to come to do this when there were countless options.

Now that I think about it, I only lasted 5 days because my relative was there, and I wasn't trying to hurt his feelings, but my mum has never forgotten how he made her daughter suffer😂.

I also worked for an organization that somehow managed to convert all of its employees into marketers with unrealistic targets. I know that I can work under pressure, but when the strain becomes so intense that it steals sleep from my eyes, peace from my mind, and causes me to lose weight, the only way to go is out the door. My mental health is just as important.

Back to the marketing job I was recently offered, I'm really undecided at the moment. I also had to reach out to the amazing @asherroberts—a real estate expert, might I also add—for advice. Thank you for your time, Asher.

My dad still reminds me of the time I stubbornly refused to heed his advice and opted to ‘hawk food’ in the streets of Lagos. Lol, I LOVE THAT MAN!

Meanwhile, am I wrong for wanting to turn down this job opportunity because of my previous experiences with the role?

Do you think this is a dream job or a nightmare?

Also, please tell me, what is that job role or career you know in your heart of hearts that you’ll never do?

I'm laughing hard right now 🤣 😂 😅 Your dad must have warned you but you refused 😄

It's good you know your strengths though. One time I interned at a bank and I was supposed to touch different departments in the bank, I tried the waka-waka marketing department a few times and I knew it wasn't for me.

I'm never doing anything marketing again.

He warned me, several times. I just never listen. Even now, I do whatever I set my mind to, minus this marketing thing though😂😂😂. You see that bank own ehn, I'm never trying that one, not after I saw a grown woman crying like a baby because of the target she had to meet. Marketers are superheroes!
