My Funniest Market Friday Experienced

Hello, @dswigle and @asean.hive community members and friends.

Until now I can't stop laughing thinking of what had happened yesterday. My purpose was to send money, my friend want it quickly for her daughter's hospitalization. When I got up from bed, I wore my ninja attire and walk without drinking any water or coffee. After sending money, along my way, I passed a bofia. (quick stall selling coffee and sandwiches is called Sofia) There was no customer so I got the chance to buy and I sat down on the bench waiting for my order. It was supposed to be for men and not for women. It is a public place in front of the bank. It is a commercial area near the turned about circle going in four directions of the city center. It was the first time I did it. Men were staring at me. I knew what was in their mind. Maybe, they thought that I am a pick-up a girl. I ignored them. I was not doing badly. I just sat down on the bench under the heat of the sun at almost 10 in the morning. Few people around during the day. But if it is night, I don't want to buy food in that place.

I don't want to buy it but I need something new for @dswigle. We have a lot of food at home. I sacrificed my 2.5USD buying fruit juice and chicken sandwich. In fairness, their melon juice tastes pure. Before my decision, I saw two women so I followed them.

They were going to bofia. So, I let them be served first and I sat down on the bench while waiting my turn.

Take pictures of all angles of the area.

I saw all their menu and the kind of juices they have. I saw the two women ordering green tea with mint.

I turned and start something funny

The waiter thought that I was a real Saudi. They behaved accordingly. I talked the way how Saudi women did. Later on, they noticed that I was an expatriate. They were staring at me while I was making a video around the street corner. It was not the normal behavior of a Saudian lady. It was my action that lose their respect for me. I never mind it as long as I was not doing badly. I was just trying to eat in front of them, in front of the people.

No woman will sit down on this bench and it was only me.

They were busy making my order and they have a customer on the front side. I patiently waited for my order.

I saw a man, a cleaner in yellow uniform, he looked hungry so I gave him 5 Saudi Riyal so he could eat what he wanted while I was eating.

He knew how to speak English and he said thank you to me.

The waiter called me and got my order. I went back to the bench and ate my food.

The ninja now will eat! Hahaha @dswigle, look at me how I mistakenly ate my sandwich while my mouth and face had covered. There is a video and when I got home, I realized why those people inside the bofia, laughed at me.

I sipped my fresh melon juice and remember, they didn't return my change. I stopped eating and I took my sandwich back home.

This was how I asked for my change. I am willing to give if they told me, to keep it. But ignoring and taking advantage, it was a different story, I claimed!

inbound8419178807907489245.jpg

I stopped eating and show my disappointment. When I claimed the change, they started asking phone number and my name but I didn't give my number and name. For what? They might call me thinking that I am a bad woman.

They were all young men from other countries and I felt pity too. I knew it was my fault why they almost lost their respect. I told them that I went to the bank for remittances and I am not the woman whom they suspected as a picked-up woman. I corrected their dirty-minded before I departed. I cleared their mind and told them not to think wrong against me. I am an old woman, they didn't see my face. I told them I am like their mother who needs respect. We became friends for a short time and took a groupie picture so I could share it with my friends especially @dswigle.

Long before, women were not allowed to talk with men in public. I did talk to them because the law for Saudi women was changed but there are still limitations lately. It has been two years ago when womens were allowed to drive and allowed to travel alone without make companion.

Thank you, readers, @dswigle, and @asean.hive admin and community members.

HIVE ON!

Haha, sounds like some folks over there still aren't used to you being able to talk with them and call out their mistakes and bad customer service. I am glad though you somehow turned this situation into a positive thing, that is a social skill not many people have.

I tried to make things right. They became dirty minded when I just sat down on the bench while waiting for my order. They started staring me. Maybe, they thought that I am a young lady because they didn't see my face hahahaha. Thank you my friend.

OMG! @olivia08 I read this when it first came in, had to leave town, but, missed yours before I left! I still get a laugh out of this. If they only knew how sweet you are, not some woman of the night!

They certainly have changed what is allowed there, for sure. It was a place nobody wanted to send families, usually, the men went themselves for a short duration. I can see where it would be hard to adjust as a western woman.

I think you do amazingly well in a country not your own, living by standards not like yours at all. I applaud you and also, I loved your post this week! My apologies for responding so late!

I love the concept of #MarketFriday and how our cultures differ and then again, how much they are alike. Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages. Along with the fact of what is normal for where you live? These are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I had hoped that posting here will familiarize you with the world around you just a little bit more. Viewing it from a more personal level as opposed to the newsworthy level gives me a better understanding of the people and a view that is often not seen on television. Sometimes,it seems like I learn more on some social medias about a certain incident than what the news tells me.

I appreciate the amazing support given to #MarketFriday! Thank you! Your participation adds a piece of your world, and I have to say, people are interested in seeing it. This entire challenge has opened up the world to me and so many others. Thank you again for being a part of all this! I am so happy to see you here! I hope you have a fabulous day! Hive on!!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how: I put this in for those reading your post, so they will know the rules.

Rules of the Road

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
  3. Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated)
  5. Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
  6. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
  7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. If you don't and someone reads it, there is nothing to tie #MarketFriday to that post.
  8. Please only one post each week. Believe it not, I run out of voting power if you put in many more than that.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!
