Corrective Action: The Lack of Preventive Maintenance (ENG ) (ESP)

We may think that living in this globalized world would bring benefits regarding costs, since parts and repair labour would be so competitive that their cost would come down. How wrong we could be.

It does not matter where you live, either North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, or any part in the world, that principle would apply no matter what.

Probably, with what we do for living, we could afford to call a technician to carry out a repair at home for us, or we can take the broken-down device to the repair shop.

Regardless of the decision we make, we may end up doing things by ourselves, leaving only the very specialized tasks to technical people.

Hand labour per hour could be high, by our standards. Let me tell you about a lady friend of mine who lives in Freiburg, the Black Forest region in west Germany, fairly near the belgian border. She works as a freelance and makes, according to her, between 80 to 100 euros per day.

Podemos pensar que vivir en este mundo globalizado traería beneficios en cuanto a costos, ya que las piezas y la mano de obra de las reparaciones serían tan competitivas que su costo bajaría. Qué equivocados estamos.

No importa dónde vivas, ya sea en América del Norte, Europa, América Latina, Asia o cualquier parte del mundo, ese principio se aplicaría sin importar nada.

Probablemente, con lo que hacemos para vivir, podríamos permitirnos llamar a un técnico para que nos haga una reparación en casa, o podemos llevar el aparato averiado al taller.

Independientemente de la decisión que tomemos, es posible que acabemos haciendo las cosas por nosotros mismos, dejando sólo la tarea muy especializada a los técnicos

El costo de la mano de obra por hora podría ser elevado, según nuestros estándares. Permítanme hablarles de una amiga mía que vive en Friburgo, la región de la Selva Negra en el oeste de Alemania, bastante cerca de la frontera belga. Trabaja como freelance y gana, según ella, entre 80 y 100 euros al día.

Well, it so happened that once, her washing machine stopped working. Not being very keen on repairing things by herself, she called a technician to diagnose what was wrong with it. It took him one and a half hour, or 90 min to find out what was going on; his fees? €40. Just imagen, almost half of what she makes daily.

I remember she sent me web messages because she wanted me to guide her about what to do. She says that although I may not be a specialist on certain things, she trusts me because I have a trained mind.

Pues bien, sucedió que una vez, su lavadora dejó de funcionar. Como no es muy aficionada a reparar cosas por sí misma, llamó a un técnico para que diagnosticara lo que le pasaba. Este tardó una hora y media, es decir, 90 minutos, en averiguar lo qué pasaba; sus honorarios... 40 euros. Imagínense, casi la mitad de lo que ella gana a diario.

Recuerdo que me envió mensajes por internet porque quería que la orientara sobre lo que debía hacer. Dice que aunque no sea un especialista en ciertas cosas, confía en mí porque tengo una mente entrenada.

In a similar manner, this happened to me last week, though I did not call a technician.

First of all, I set out to diagnose it myself, thinking that I may have all the necessary tools to do the job, I mean, wrenches, sockets, screw drivers, etc. At that moment I did not think about any special tool that I might need to do it.

Anyway, I just got down to business. To do that I followed some steps.

First, I disconnected the washing machine from the mains.

Next step was to take off the back plastic cover.

De manera similar, me ocurrió la semana pasada, aunque no llamé a un técnico.

En primer lugar, me dispuse a diagnosticarlo por mi mismo, pensando que podría tener todas las herramientas necesarias para hacer el trabajo, es decir, llaves, dados, destornilladores, etc. En ese momento no pensé en ninguna herramienta especial que pudiera necesitar para hacerlo.

En fin, me puse manos a la obra. Para ello seguí algunos pasos.

Primero, desconecté la lavadora de la red eléctrica.

El siguiente paso fue quitar la tapa de plástico trasera.

Following this, I disconnected the drain hose.

A continuación, desconecté la manguera de drenaje.

Next step was to dismount the motor guard. The function of this guard is to protect the assembly during operation from hitting the floor due to the excessive weight it may have been loaded with.

El siguiente paso fue desmontar el protector del conjunto motor-transmision. La función del protector es proteger el conjunto durante el funcionamiento para que no se golpee contra el suelo debido al excesivo peso con el que puede haber sido cargado..

After this, the step to follow was to dismount the motor belt. To do that, the motor’s bolts were untightened in order to loosen them up so as to push the motor along the bolt’s slot and finally slide the motor belt over the pooley.

Después de esto, el paso a seguir fue desmontar la correa del motor. Para ello, se desajustaron los tornillos del motor para aflojarlos y poder empujar el motor por la ranura del tornillo y, finalmente, deslizar la correa del motor sobre la pooley.

Once the pooley was free from the motor belt, it could be wiggled around to find out if there was an excessive play.

Una vez que el pooley estaba libre de la correa del motor, se podía menear para averiguar si había un juego excesivo.

It was found that the pooley had too much play. Next step was to dismount it to see upto what extent this play affected the operation.

Se encontró que la polea tenía demasiada juego. El siguiente paso fue desmontarla para ver hasta qué punto esta juego afectaba al funcionamiento.

Once it was done, two plastic sprockets were revealed with some of their teeth bent at their edge or with some indentation. From my inspection it was not something to worry about since they could be found on local shops and relatively cheap.

Una vez realizado, se notaron dos piñones de plástico con algunos de sus dientes doblados en su borde o con alguna indentación. Por lo que vi, no era algo de lo que preocuparse, ya que se podían encontrar en tiendas locales y eran relativamente baratos.

At this point the play of the transmission axle could be seen easily.

En este punto se podía ver fácilmente el juego del eje de la transmisión.

Up to this point I could tell by this excessive play that the bushings and bearings of the transmission axle were worn out. In addition, the agitator plate inside the drum did not turn while the transmission axle was being turned. This also implied that the gears inside the transmission were worn and that the transmission had to be replaced.

Honestly, this could have been foreseen long before if some Preventive Maintenance had been carried out.

When I arrived to this point the only decision to make was to continue disassembling or dismounting the transmission.

However, there was a major draw back for me. Once I managed to dismount the agitator plate, I came across with the nut that coupled the drum to the transmission. To untighten that nut I did not have the correct tool or any one that I could use.

Hasta este punto pude comprobar, por este excesivo juego, que las bocinas y rodamientos del eje de transmisión estaban desgastados. Además, la placa agitadora del interior del tambor no giraba mientras el eje de la transmisión lo hacia. Esto también implicaba que los engranajes del interior de la transmisión estaban desgastados y que había que cambiar dicha transmisión.

Sinceramente, esto se podía haber previsto mucho antes si se hubiera realizado algún tipo de Mantenimiento Preventivo.

Cuando llegué a este punto, la única decisión que había que tomar era la de seguir bajando o desmontando la transmisión.

Sin embargo, había un inconveniente importante para mí. Una vez que conseguí desmontar el plato agitador, me encontré con la tuerca que acoplaba el tambor a la transmisión. Para aflojar esa tuerca no disponía de la herramienta adecuada ni de ninguna que pudiera utilizar.

The only thing left to do was to measure indirectly the size of the nut so that I could, in the days to come, locate a convenient wrench to do the job.

Lo único que quedaba por hacer era medir indirectamente el tamaño de la tuerca para poder, en los próximos días, localizar una llave o dado adecuado para hacer el trabajo.

So, among the symptoms that allow someone to tell if the transmission of a washing machine has to be refurbished or replace are:

1.- The agitator plate does not turn as the axle of the transmission does
2.- Excessive play in the transmission axle

As a summary, a preventive check should be carried out frequently not to end up applying corrective action instead of a preventive one.

This diagnosing action ended up by reassembling everything back to its original state till the resources are available to complete the repair.

Así que, entre los síntomas que permiten saber si la transmisión de una lavadora tiene que ser reconstruida o sustituida están:
1.- La plato agitador no gira como lo hace el eje de la transmisión.
2.- Excesivo juego en el eje de la transmisión.

Como resumen, se debe realizar una revisión preventiva frecuente para no terminar aplicando una acción correctiva en lugar de una preventiva.

Esta acción de diagnóstico terminó por volver a reensamblar todo a su estado original hasta que se disponga de los recursos para completar la reparación.
