Mi etapa como violinista // My time as a violinist
¡Hola hivers! Que gusto saludar a todos los que me leen, en especial a la comunidad de @aliento. Hoy quiero contarles sobre una de las mejores épocas de mi vida, la de mayor aprendizaje, disciplina y responsabilidad. Si algo genera orgullo en Venezuela es el sistema de orquestas Sinfónica. Tuve la dicha de ser parte del sistema durante 6 años y acá les contaré toda mi experiencia.
Hi hivers! What a pleasure to greet everyone who reads me, especially the @aliento community. Today I want to tell you about one of the best times of my life, the one of greatest learning, discipline and responsibility. If something generates pride in Venezuela, it is the Symphony Orchestra System. I had the joy of being part of the system for 6 years and here I will tell you all about my experience.
En el año 2008 cuando tenía 11 años de edad mis padres me inscriben en la Orquesta Sinfónica infantil de Cantaura, no sabía de que se trataba, sólo sabía que aprendería a tocar un instrumento, pero no tenía ni idea de toda la responsabilidad que se me avecinaba. Ese año también inscribieron a dos de mis primas cercanas, así que pensé que la experiencia sería mejor con ellas cerca. Fui a mi primer día de clases y era sobre el ritmo y el lenguaje musical, desde ahí me encantó el mundo musical. La clase era muy entretenida, además compartía salón con más de 30 niños de mi edad, así que era una oportunidad para hacer nuevos amigos. Aprender a leer música no es tarea fácil, requiere estudio y preparación, así que los primeros meses fueron clases de solfeo, ritmo y teoría musical, además éramos parte de una coral infantil.
In 2008 when I was 11 years old my parents enrolled me in the Cantaura Children's Symphony Orchestra, I didn't know what it was about, I only knew that I would learn to play an instrument, but I had no idea of all the responsibility that was coming my way. That year they also enrolled two of my close cousins, so I thought the experience would be better with them around. I went to my first day of class and it was about rhythm and musical language, from there I loved the musical world. The class was very entertaining, plus I was sharing a room with over 30 other kids my age, so it was an opportunity to make new friends. Learning to read music is not an easy task, it requires study and preparation, so the first months were solfeggio, rhythm and music theory classes, and we were also part of a children's choir.
Al cabo de unas semanas empezamos con nuestro primer instrumento el cual era una flauta dulce, era sencillo de tocar pero debíamos aprendernos varias melodías para nuestro primer concierto. Este primer concierto fue en diciembre y en un estadio, había muchísima gente y yo sentía muchos nervios pero todo salió bien y la experiencia fue de lo mejor. Después de unas vacaciones navideñas volvimos a las clases y era el momento de que escogieramos el instrumento que íbamos a querer tocar en la orquesta. Teníamos que escoger bien porque luego no habrían cambios. Fue difícil, eran muchos instrumentos, pero al final me decidí por uno de los instrumentos más difíciles el Violín.
After a few weeks we started with our first instrument which was a recorder, it was simple to play but we had to learn several melodies for our first concert. This first concert was in December and in a stadium, there were a lot of people and I was very nervous but everything went well and the experience was the best. After the Christmas vacations we went back to school and it was time for us to choose the instrument we wanted to play in the orchestra. We had to choose well because then there would be no changes. It was difficult, there were many instruments, but in the end I decided on one of the most difficult instruments, the violin.
Empecé a ver clases de violín todas las tardes de 2pm a 4pm, además seguía con las clases de lenguaje musical, casi no tenía tiempo para las tareas del colegio, pero me gustaba tanto la orquesta que tuve que aprender a organizarme y ser eficiente en las dos actividades. Aprender a tocar violín no fue nada fácil, llevo muchísimo tiempo y trabajo, por mi edad pertenecía a una orquesta infantil y cada cierto tiempo hacíamos conciertos con diferentes repertorios. Mi verdadera meta era pasar a la orquesta juvenil, pues ahí el repertorio era más difícil y ensayaban mucho más tiempo. Así que llegó mi primera audición, estaba muy nervioso pero logré tocar lo que me pidieron y al finalizar me dieron la notícia de que había sido aceptado para formar parte de la orquesta juvenil en la fila de segundos violines. Estaba muy feliz.
I started to watch violin lessons every afternoon from 2pm to 4pm, I also continued with musical language classes, I had almost no time for school homework, but I liked the orchestra so much that I had to learn to organize myself and be efficient in both activities. Learning to play violin was not easy, it took a lot of time and work, for my age I belonged to a children's orchestra and every so often we did concerts with different repertoires. My real goal was to move to the youth orchestra, because there the repertoire was more difficult and they rehearsed much longer. So my first audition came, I was very nervous but I managed to play what they asked me to play and at the end they gave me the news that I had been accepted to be part of the youth orchestra in the second violin section. I was very happy.
La juvenil conlleva una responsabilidad más grande, ya que tocan repertorios de orquestas profesionales, necesitaba ponerme al nivel de mis compañeros así que no fue nada fácil. Empecé a ver clases de violín de 2pm a 4 pm y ensayos generales con la orquesta de 6pm a 8pm todos los días. Terminaba el día muy cansado pero me gustaba mucho lo que hacía. Poco a poco me fui adaptando a la orquesta y luego de un tiempo llegué a ser asistente del principal de la fila de segundos violines, es decir tocaba en el atril principal, así que la responsabilidad aumentaba. Los conciertos eran cada 15 días y era muy emocionante, la orquesta fue subiendo de nivel y llegó a ser reconocida como una de las mejores del Estado. Cuando teníamos algun concierto importante hacíamos seminarios los fines de semana desde la mañana hasta la noche. Era mucha la responsabilidad.
The youth orchestra carries more responsibility, as they play repertoire from professional orchestras, I needed to catch up with my peers so it was not easy. I started seeing violin lessons from 2pm to 4pm and dress rehearsals with the orchestra from 6pm to 8pm every day. I would end the day very tired but I really liked what I was doing. Little by little I was adapting to the orchestra and after a while I became assistant to the principal of the second violin row, that is to say I played at the main music stand, so the responsibility increased. The concerts were every 15 days and it was very exciting, the orchestra was rising in level and became recognized as one of the best in the state. When we had an important concert, we had seminars on weekends from morning to night. It was a lot of responsibility.
Al tiempo se creó una sede del Conservatorio nacional de música en la ciudad de Puerto La Cruz, aproximadamente a una hora de mi pueblo, así que muchos decidimos ir a audicionar. El momento de las audiciones es de mucha tensión y nerviosismo, tienes a un jurado evaluando tu participación y el margen de error es muy pequeño. Logré pasar la audición y entrar al Conservatorio de música, así que tendría que viajar cada 15 días a la ciudad de Puerto La Cruz a ver clases de violín y solfeo musical. Lastimosamente el proyecto de conservatorio en la ciudad se suspendio y quedó como única sede la ciudad de Caracas, así que no pude seguir siendo parte.
At the time, a branch of the National Conservatory of Music was created in the city of Puerto La Cruz, about an hour away from my town, so many of us decided to go to audition. The moment of the auditions is very tense and nervous, you have a jury evaluating your participation and the margin of error is very small. I managed to pass the audition and enter the Conservatory of Music, so I would have to travel every 15 days to the city of Puerto La Cruz to see violin and music solfeggio classes. Unfortunately the conservatory project in the city was suspended and the only venue was the city of Caracas, so I could not continue to be part of it.
Con el tiempo en mi orquesta se realizó un festival de solistas, esa era mi oportunidad para presentar mi concierto junto a la orquesta, así que después de mucha práctica, hice mi primer concierto como solista. Tenía mucho miedo y nervios, en el concierto había mucha gente y estaba hasta la alcaldesa de mi ciudad, además que todo estaba siendo grabado para ser retransmitido por la televisión local. Pude enfrentar ese miedo terrible que tenía y completar mi concierto. Fue una gran experiencia. La orquesta juvenil empezó a subir muchísimo de nivel y así llegó nuestra primera gira fuera de nuestro estado. Esta primera gira era a Ciudad Bolivar en el estado Bolívar. Tuvimos dos conciertos increíbles, además que el viaje con los compañeros fue excelente, el último día pudimos disfrutar de la piscina del hotel y fueron momentos muy agradables, al final de todo seguíamos siendo niños y esos viajes eran como una gran aventura.
Eventually in my orchestra there was a festival of soloists, that was my opportunity to present my concert with the orchestra, so after much practice, I made my first concert as a soloist. I was very scared and nervous, in the concert there were many people and even the mayoress of my city was there, besides everything was being recorded to be broadcasted by the local television. I was able to face that terrible fear I had and complete my concert. It was a great experience. The youth orchestra began to rise to a very high level and so came our first tour outside of our state. This first tour was to Ciudad Bolivar in the state of Bolivar. We had two incredible concerts, besides the trip with our companions was excellent, the last day we were able to enjoy the hotel pool and those were very nice moments, at the end of the day we were still children and those trips were like a great adventure.
En el año 2013 tuvimos nuestra primera gran gira profesional, se llamó la Gira Mirandina ya que hicimos 4 conciertos en el estado Miranda y en la capital de Venezuela, Caracas. El primer concierto fue en la ciudad de Guatire, el segundo en la ciudad de Los Teques, la tercera ciudad que visitamos fue San Antonio de los Altos y para finalizar la gira con broche de oro hicimos un concierto en el Teatro Municipal de Chacao uno de los más importantes del país. Fue una gira increíble, todo salió bien y lo disfrutamos muchísimo, además tocamos una de mis obras favoritas que era la Suite Sinfónica Scheherezade del compositor ruso Nikolái Rimski-Kórsakov.
In 2013 we had our first big professional tour, it was called the Mirandina Tour since we did 4 concerts in the state of Miranda and in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas. The first concert was in the city of Guatire, the second in the city of Los Teques, the third city we visited was San Antonio de los Altos and to finish the tour with a flourish we did a concert at the Teatro Municipal de Chacao one of the most important in the country. It was an incredible tour, everything went well and we enjoyed it very much, we also played one of my favorite works which was the Symphonic Suite Scheherezade by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Fueron muchas las obras famosas que pudimos ejecutar, entre ellas El Cascanueces de Tchaikovsky el cual también se hizo con un ballet profesional y se volvió una tradición navideña durante 4 años, llenando por completo el teatro en todas sus funciones. Para muchos la música clásica puede ser aburrida. Pero Ojalá supieran la sensación de tocar en una orquesta, la dificultad que conlleva y el amor y pasión que los músicos entregan al ejecutar sus instrumentos.
There were many famous works that we were able to perform, among them Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker which was also performed with a professional ballet and became a Christmas tradition for 4 years, filling the theater to capacity in all its performances. For many people classical music can be boring. But I wish they knew the feeling of playing in an orchestra, the difficulty it entails and the love and passion that the musicians put into playing their instruments.
Esta etapa en mi vida fue muy especial, aún lo recuerdo con mucho cariño. Realmente estar en el sistema ayudó a forjar mi carácter, aprender a ser disciplinado, responsable y puntual, además que aprendes mucho de cultura, historia y arte. Este etapa también fue de sacrifios y de entregarle mucho tiempo. Pero sin duda valió la pena y si volviera a nacer escogería vivir esa experiencia de nuevo. Invito a los padres y jóvenes que me leen y quieren ser parte del sistema a que se animen y lo hagan y vivan la experiencia, el apoyo de los padres es muy importante. De tres primos que empezamos juntos esta travesía en el mundo músical sólo una de mis primas siguió y optó por éste arte como profesión, ella actualmente se encuentra en París, Francia estudiando en un conservatorio de música. Son muchas las experiencias y anécdotas que faltaron por contar, pero seguiré haciéndolo en próximos posts.
This stage in my life was very special, I still remember it fondly. Being in the system really helped to forge my character, to learn to be disciplined, responsible and punctual, plus you learn a lot about culture, history and art. This stage also involved sacrifices and a lot of time. But without a doubt it was worth it and if I were born again I would choose to live that experience again. I invite parents and young people who read me and want to be part of the system to do it and live the experience, the support of parents is very important. Of three cousins who started together this journey in the musical world only one of my cousins continued and chose this art as a profession, she is currently in Paris, France studying at a music conservatory. There are many experiences and anecdotes left to tell, but I will continue to do so in future posts.

Saludos amigo, que sorpresa que seas de Cantaura hay vive parte de mi familia, a mi me fuera gustado aprende a tocar algún instrumento, pero nunca tuve la oportunidad.
