Hace unos meses conocí a Henry, mi paciente. Llegó a mi consulta para hacerse unas extracciónes dentales. Al revisarlo me doy cuenta que Henry sufre de bruxismo severo (rechina los dientes) y que producto de este trastorno sus dientes se habían desgastado, al punto de que solo quedaba la opción de extraer ciertos dientes. El hace mucho tiempo ya había usado prótesis dental, pero ya estaba muy deteriorada y dejó de usarla. En este caso debía hacer muchas cosas, lo primero era devolver la función masticatoria y corregir el bruxismo, ya que de nada iba a servir realizar una prótesis sin antes corregir este problema. Primero está la salud que la parte estética.
A few months ago I met Henry, my patient. He came to my office for dental extractions. Upon examining him I realized that Henry suffers from severe bruxism (teeth grinding) and that as a result of this disorder his teeth had worn down to the point that the only option left was to extract certain teeth. He had been wearing dentures a long time ago, but they were already very deteriorated and he stopped using them. In this case he had to do many things, the first was to restore the chewing function and correct the bruxism, since it would be useless to make a prosthesis without first correcting this problem. Health comes before esthetics.
Empezamos nuestro proceso de rehabilitación realizando dos exodoncias simples (extracciónes dentales) sin mayor complicación, el paciente cicatrizó y se recuperó de forma rápida. Después de culminado el tiempo de reposo, se procedió a realizar limpieza dental y a planificar el caso protesico. La prótesis está pensada para corregir la función masticatoria y devolver estetica al paciente. Se decidió realizar una prótesis parcial removible Metal - acrílica con dos apoyos metálicos que ayudarán a subir la mordida y corregir el bruxismo severo que presentaba el paciente. Luego de tener claro lo que íbamos a realizar con ayuda de mi técnico dental, procedimos a tomar las impresiones dentales tanto superior e inferior de nuestro paciente. Con esas impresiones se realizaría los modelos en yeso con los cuales se haría la prótesis.
We began our rehabilitation process by performing two simple exodontia (dental extractions) without major complications, the patient healed and recovered quickly. After the rest period was over, we proceeded to perform dental cleaning and to plan the prosthetic case. The prosthesis was designed to correct the masticatory function and restore the patient's esthetics. It was decided to make a metal-acrylic removable partial prosthesis with two metal supports that will help to raise the bite and correct the severe bruxism that the patient presented. After having clear what we were going to do with the help of my dental technician, we proceeded to take dental impressions of both the upper and lower teeth of our patient. With these impressions we would make the plaster models with which the prosthesis would be made.
A partir de este punto, mi técnico dental tomó el control y hace su trabajo. A los dos días de tomar las impresiones, realizamos una prueba de mordida en cera para dejar un registro que nos ayudaría en la elaboración de la prótesis, además hicimos la selección de color de los dientes, los más exacta posible. Ya solo quedaba esperar que el técnico nos entregara la prótesis lista para hacer la instalación. Esos días solo deseaba que todo saliera bien. Confío mucho en mi trabajo y en mi técnico dental, pero siempre los nervios y la ansiedad por ver el resultado final se apoderan de mi 😂
From this point on, my dental technician took control and did his job. Two days after taking the impressions, we made a wax bite test to leave a record that would help us in the elaboration of the prosthesis, we also made the color selection of the teeth, as accurate as possible. Now we only had to wait for the technician to deliver the prosthesis ready for installation. Those days I just wanted everything to go well. I have a lot of confidence in my work and in my dental technician, but always the nerves and the anxiety to see the final result take over me 😂.
Llegó el día de la instalación, todos estábamos emocionados por ver el resultado final. Procedimos a ponerle su prótesis nueva y se adaptó perfecto. Al verlo me dió mucha emoción porque el cambio era evidente, se veía muy bien y todo había salido bien gracias a Dios. Le dimos un espejo para que el pudiera observar su nueva prótesis y quedó muy contento con el resultado, se notaba su emoción. Este trabajo fue muy exitoso, la parte estética quedó increíble, pero la parte funcional quedó mucho mejor, el paciente ahora tiene mejor mordida, mejor fonética y tuvo una adaptación muy rápida. El mismo paciente tuvo la confianza de decir que podía hablar normal y que se sentía normal con la prótesis, eso es todo un éxito. Muchas veces a los pacientes les cuesta adaptarse a la prótesis nueva. Pero en este caso Henry salió de mi consultorio hablando y riéndose con una naturalidad increíble.
The day of the fitting arrived, we were all excited to see the final result. We proceeded to put on his new prosthesis and it fit perfectly. When I saw him I was very excited because the change was evident, he looked great and everything had gone well thank God. We gave him a mirror so he could observe his new prosthesis and he was very happy with the result, you could see his excitement. This work was very successful, the esthetic part was incredible, but the functional part was much better, the patient now has a better bite, better phonetics and had a very fast adaptation. The patient himself had the confidence to say that he could speak normally and that he felt normal with the prosthesis, that is a great success. Many times patients have a hard time adapting to a new prosthesis. But in this case Henry left my office talking and laughing with an incredible naturalness.
Cómo dice el título de mi post, cambiar una sonrisa es cambiar una vida, esto es totalmente cierto. Eso es lo que amo de mi trabajo. Al principio recibí a un paciente, inseguro, que le costaba sonreír, que sentía pena de su dentadura y que sufría de dolor debido a su trastorno. Y luego me tocó despedir a un paciente con su autoestima muy alta, con ganas de sonreír y hablar, un paciente que ya no siente pena y que por el contrario quiere mostrar su nueva sonrisa. Cambiamos una sonrisa, pero también cambiamos su salud, su actitud, su forma de relacionarse, cambiamos su vida.
As the title of my post says, to change a smile is to change a life, this is totally true. That is what I love about my work. At the beginning I received a patient, insecure, who had a hard time smiling, who felt sorry for his teeth and suffered from pain due to his disorder. And then I had to say goodbye to a patient with very high self-esteem, who wanted to smile and talk, a patient who no longer felt sorry for himself and who, on the contrary, wanted to show off his new smile. We change a smile, but we also change his health, his attitude, his way of relating, we change his life.
No importa si fuiste descuidado con tu salud oral, no importa el problema dental que tengas, eso no te define y nunca es tarde para decidir cambiar tu sonrisa. ✅🦷
