Caning Clay

I did not plan making this post but because I had been struggling with my canes, I decided to share this.

Not all polymer clay are made specifically for caning. The soft ones are usually best made for icings or ice creams or even creams.

Then, there is the brands. I do not want to be very brand specific but, if the clay says its soft, easily kneadable, then, caning is the last thing for it.

Just look at the corners of this slab. The reason why I have those moshed up part was because the clay was too soft. I am not talking about me slicing the cane immediately- I waited for awhile to do that but, this is the result.

Yeah, so it did not just happen on one piece, it happened on another slab as well.

This is me attempting to salvage my other piece. Well, the thing is, and I forgot to add that in the beginning, do not use soft clay, do not use clay softener or even oil to condition your clay.

Cause caning- clay caning is basically creating patterns in a cane. Its like, wherever you slice on the cane, the same pattern will appear no matter what. The secret is having a good quality clay- not easily moshed up and is able to hold its shape- no matter how hard you manipulate it.

I learned the hard way so I hope this is helpful for anyone out there who's planning on doing this.
