A few days ago I wrote an interesting article about the importance for an educator to have an assertive communication. It is that the role of a good educator is maintained in all areas of his life. It cannot be divided being one in the classroom and the other in the street. The teachers of the past, wherever they were standing, were always giving classes with their performance and with a language according to the situation. It was very difficult and even almost impossible to hear a good teacher or professor swearing or saying insults or insults to a seller or shouting out the window of the car against another driver. Anyone who is dedicated to be a trainer of others, to give classes, must have an assertive communication.

Let us then consider what are those elements of assertive communication that impact on the educational and motivational process of the student. According to my criteria, product of years of literary research on the subject of leadership and organizational communication, as well as after having taught a significant amount of hours of academic training, I present to your condition this following list of elements:

  • Voice pitone: Although we are all born with a certain frequency level that gives us the characteristic of our voice, we can change and improve it with the study of proper modulation techniques. The tone of voice is a determining aspect to gain the respect of your students. Knowing how to project the voice, transmitting the required security and in many occasions our tone of voice determines the work of a class. A very important aspect is the fact of avoiding the use of a monotonous and tiring tone because it causes the student to stop listening to us. In many occasions our tone of voice is not adequate and reflects too clearly our state of mind.

The one who has a higher tone of voice is not the best teacher. It is not necessary to have the voice of an announcer. It is important that our voice reflects decision and passion, that we believe what we are transmitting, that we are credible in our explanations, that we avoid hesitation and above all that we avoid not finishing one sentence and starting with another.

  • Empathy: For me, empathy is the determining aspect in the educational process. To be a teacher without being empathetic is something I cannot conceive of in education. In another article I referred to the importance of empathy as a key factor in the relationship between student and teacher. One of the main enemies of empathy is rigidity in beliefs. Today the educator must understand that the student comes from home where there are an enormous amount of problems that are out of his hands. In ancient times, if a student said, "I forgot my homework," he was immediately scraped and sometimes punished. Today it must be understood that it is very easy for an area to have no electricity for 24 hours straight, or for the internet connection to be down for hours at a time. There are many imponderables that a student has to go through in today's Venezuela. Those teachers who lack empathy are, in general, those who have more problems relating to a group.
  • Great thinkers: from the very apostles of Jesus to the most prominent management gurus, have written about the importance of listening. Although the tendency in the last centuries has been to give privilege to speaking. There are great academies that teach the art of speaking, but who teaches us to listen? During a child's growth, unless he has a medical condition in his auditory system, no one, neither at home nor at school, teaches him to listen.

Listening carefully to our students and nodding our heads helps to earn their respect. Students greatly appreciate it when we connect with them, when we share in their successes as well as their failures, their joys as well as their worries.

All of us must have the self-awareness to dedicate time to the continuous improvement of our lives. At present in the country both companies and individuals are leaving aside to invest time and resources in training in soft skills. If we want to have a better future, learning now is vital.
