LIFE OUTSIDE CRYPTOCURRENCY

At the top of my to-do list for 2022 was to reduce my dependence on the income I make from hive. It has been a great run for the past four years, writing content and engaging with the hive community, but currently, hive cannot sustain my lifestyle, no matter how frugal I live. Plus, I have 3 serious financial commitments in the next 12 months, so I had to try something else.

My partner suggested I get a job as an insurer since that's my discipline, but I don’t see myself slaving over someone for $200-$400 monthly and I honestly do not want to work for someone else. Hive gives me freedom (and an equivalent of the salary I would be offered for an entry-level job--I don't care about) and anything I will do should afford me the same luxury or pay more.

The other option was to pursue a career as a developer (which I am currently doing as well). I have plans to get into the tech industry but that is for the long haul--sometime next year. It would be unwise to rush the learning experience just so I can make extra cash. So I was left with one option: become an uber driver.

I got my car last year for the rideshare business. Initially, I wanted to drive myself because I heard how drivers mismanage cars in their possession, but I was reluctant. Also, this service requires meeting people and I don't know my way around Ibadan (where I currently live) because I just moved about a year ago.

However, last month I had an epiphany of some sort: my whole existence has been tied to cryptocurrency. I have held it so dear because it gave me something I thought I could not get anywhere else–freedom. However, I wanted more for myself–I think I deserved it, and so I am working towards it.

I hit the road yesterday after registering on one of the popular rideshare platforms in Nigeria and I would say it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be. I enjoy moving around and seeing new places and faces. It is like living another dream of mine–which is to travel the world. My new side hustle always me to explore my town and meet new people.

Unfortunately, the rideshare business is time-consuming. I have spent close to 12 hours on the road in the past two days, which has translated to less time on hive. It would be difficult to keep up with my activities on hive. I have to set realistic goals for myself and come up with a routine that manages my time efficiently.

BENEFITS OF MY SIDE HUSTLE.

Having another hustle asides creating content on hive means less selling pressure on my part. From my projection, I will be earning more than I do on hive with my rideshare business which means I would have no need to sell, well except for major projects. So this means my hive will grow a lot faster.

Also, I plan to start buying hive/hbd as opposed to selling if this turns out to be very lucrative. Asides from crypto, I will look into other ventures I can invest in as well. I have a lot in my head but I won't let the cat out of the bag yet.

Thirdly, this business offers me the opportunity to meet new people. I have lived in my bubble for a long time and I believe this is the time to come out and be all that I can be. I restarted my coding journey two weeks ago and now, I am venturing into the rideshare business. I am really pushing myself to the limit here and I won't stop until I have it all.

I still need about a month (or two) to get the hang of this business and how I can grow it. My goal now is to get my car in perfect condition (thankful, I have hive for that) so it will serve me well until I can get another, hopefully, soon

This is amazing @nonsowrites.

first ,it is great you have a partner who cares about you as much as she career about the growth of your finances..

And for the new side hustle, seeing that it is your personal car I am sure you would make good profit. Just give your self off days and time to rest, because driving can be stressful and body aching when it wants to be.

Well done

Yeah she is very supportive and she gives good advice (if I listen half of the time I will be rich)

True that... Resting is key. Driving takes a toll on one mentally and physically. This much I have learnt

Having crypto independent income also means you can "buy the dip" 😂

I wish you all the best @nonsowrites !

However, here is my 50 cent. Take this from someone whose partner was an uber driver. We HAD our car too.

  1. Let it be a side hustle like you said.

  2. Set a time limit to stop after having the much needed boost and be disciplined enough to really stop it! Driving in Nigeria turns a former gentleman to 'agbero' of some sort. It also makes you look old faster, trust me.

  3. It also kills creative thinking. Learn to take breaks and evaluate things. Since it is a highly profitable venture, you'll tend to pursue as many rides as possible in a day and if time is not taken, you won't even have time to 'drink water and drop cup'. I don't want to be specific here so that it won't look like I'm beefing my husband. Lol.
But I hope you get what I mean.

I am beginning to talk too much. Let me come and be going.

Thanks for the advise. I noticed the points you made thee past few days. I am certainly not going to work my to the ground. I have a weekly target. As soon as I get that I am off the road. Eating well is another. On my first day, I did not eat till 6pm. I almost had an accident. So it has registered in my mind not to play with my stomach.

It is difficult to grow Hive account when you need to sell in order to support the cost of living. That's reality! It is not that you don't want to grow your account, but you have to sell HIVE or HBD to meet those expenses.

When you do something to make money outside of Hive, you are not under pressure that you have to sell HIVE or HBD. You may not have that much time to be on Hive making content and interacting with others. But if you manage time, I think it will work better.

Wish you all the best!
