The Comparison That Changed My Life

I would love to say that comparison is not always harmful, though there are kinds of negative comparisons to our lives. But then, sometimes comparison pushes one into discovering a hidden potential, like in my case some years ago when I was still in the university.

There is this lady, Dimma by name, now one of my closest friends to date. It was comparison that brought us closer. Her life was an inspiration, but I started by first comparing my life with hers, admiring every single thing about her, and I kept asking myself, where was I when God was creating this lady and endowing her with lots of values ? Talk about beauty – she is beautiful. Talk about intelligence – her brain is first class. Talk about character, money, being good in practicals, the zeal to make money – the list goes on...I compared myself a lot with her and kept being hard on myself silently until one day, I mustered the courage to approach her. Thus, time, not just our casual classmate greetings, but I wanted to really meet her.

Being a free individual, she embraced the friendship I stylishly initiated, and that was the beginning of a positive influence from her to me. I was still intelligent prior to meeting with her, but her approach to studies was something else. I went with her vibes and started doing much better than I did before, to the point that our grades are usually similar after exams, but I never sat close to her during exams.

Her level of exposure when it comes to making money was on the higher side. Despite how rich her parents are, she didn't care about that; she has been a woman who prefers to make her own money to date. Not long after we finished our NYSC, she opened a fish pond business and bought her first car. Like, a lot of things about my life were affected positively in the course of this comparison .

So yeah, comparison can be good too, and it's something most of us have struggled with at some point in our lives.

Overall, comparison can either take your peace away or help sharpen your purpose in life. It all depends on where we choose to focus on.
